When the village head Qian Dabao was hosting a graduation banquet for his daughter, food poisoning occurred, sending dozens of villagers to the hospital. The root cause of the food poisoning turned out to be the contaminated water used to irrigate the vegetables. Despite the seriousness of the situation, Qian Dabao refused to believe it, even though the only factory in Shuangs Village belonged to his younger brother Qian Erbao. He trusted his brother's word that the water was clean and clear. However, Man Yihua, who had contracted the reservoir for fish farming, kept an eye on Qian Erbao's factory because the pollution was most evident in the reservoir. Her fish became unsellable in the market and eventually no one wanted them.

Qian Dabao once saved Man Yihua's life, but she showed no gratitude. Instead, she believed Qian Dabao owed her something because she hadn't wanted to live, and it was Qian Dabao's interference that kept her alive. This created a strained relationship between them. When Man Yihua focused on Qian Erbao’s factory discharges, Qian Dabao found himself in a difficult position.

Man Yihua sent a water sample from the reservoir to the Environmental Protection Bureau. Knowing he was under scrutiny, Qian Erbao vented his frustration on Qian Dabao.

After the poisoning incident, Tao Xiaohui, the newly arrived township head, was very dissatisfied with Qian Dabao's performance. They were old classmates from twenty years ago. Far from feeling honored, Qian Dabao felt like they were "natural enemies." Years ago, Qian Dabao had written a love letter to Tao Xiaohui, which she handed over to the school, resulting in his expulsion. This changed the course of his life. So when they met again, their relationship was tense and competitive. Qian Dabao often couldn’t tell whether Tao Xiaohui was acting as a classmate or a township head, mistaking criticism for harassment and care for bait. As a result, there were significant differences in their work approaches.

Qian Erbao and Qian Dabao are half-brothers from the same father, living together harmoniously in the same courtyard. During the poisoning incident, Qian Erbao provided financial assistance, helping to resolve the matter properly. However, under Man Yihua's persistent pressure, Qian Erbao's factory discharge issue gained increasing attention. Eventually, the factory was shut down by a court order. Under the pressure of production contracts, Qian Erbao took a risk, tearing off the seal and secretly restarting the factory.

For the current and future survival environment of the entire village, Qian Dabao insisted on closing Qian Erbao's factory, even at the cost of severing their brotherly relationship.

Qian Erbao threw Qian Dabao into a well, but unexpectedly, Man Yihua threw Qian Erbao's wife Zhou Lingling into the well instead. Facing life-and-death situations, Qian Erbao saw no compromise from Qian Dabao and decided to cut ties with him. The factory was completely closed, Qian Erbao went to prison for tax evasion, and his wife returned to her parents' home. The once bustling courtyard became desolate.

The villagers all supported Qian Dabao, and Tao Xiaohui also recognized his sense of responsibility towards the villagers. She developed feelings for this old classmate, taking Qian Dabao to Beijing to visit the construction of new socialist rural areas. This made Man Yihua feel left out, as she had been waiting for the right moment to express her feelings for Qian Dabao.

Upon release, Qian Erbao learned that Man Yihua had paid his taxes on his behalf, yet he still held a grudge against her for reporting him. In poverty, he constantly caused trouble for Qian Dabao. Feeling that human relationships were superficial, he gave up hope. When his son fell ill, Qian Erbao, who had previously thought he had lost face in front of the whole village, rediscovered friendship and love, deeply moved. He realized that running such a factory was wrong and unfair to everyone.

Under the guidance of the Party's policies for enriching the people and through everyone's joint efforts, the village of Shuangs regained its former beauty and prosperity. At the conference establishing the Fishery Company and the Tourism Agriculture Consortium, Qian Erbao never expected that he would be given important responsibilities...
