Episode 1 of "Tatakae!"

About twenty years before Japan was forced to open its doors by the United States, in the sixth year of Tenpo (1835), Kagoshima, with a view of the beautiful Sakurajima, was buzzing with excitement over the first return home of Shimazu Nariakira, who had inherited the position of daimyo.

At the same time, in the Imaizumi family, a branch of the Shimazu family, a much-anticipated girl was born. Her father, Shimazu Tadakata, and her mother, Sachiko, named their eldest daughter Ichio, who would later be known as Tenshoin Tatakae. Unlike her sickly brothers, Ichio was lively, curious, gentle, and kind.

Not long after, under the direction of the chief retainer Chosokabe Hirokuni, the Satsuma domain underwent severe fiscal reforms. Saigo Takamori (then known as Saigo Giichiro) witnessed the poverty of the farmers while working on agricultural policies at the domain office and reported it to Shimazu Tadayoshi, who was popular among the people. However, this matter reached the ears of Chosokabe Hirokuni, and Tadayoshi was punished for being lenient in enforcing laws against the farmers.

Ichio could not understand the actions of Chosokabe Hirokuni and believed that her father, who was always considerate towards the people, should not have been punished. So, she and her childhood friend Kaneko Shogoro (later known as Komatsu Takechi) boldly entered Chosokabe Hirokuni's residence to ask why he continued with such harsh policies.

Last week, many Japanese dramas transitioned from their initial star appeal to a stable phase where they compete based on plot quality. The NHK Taiga drama "Tatakae," led by Aoi Miyazaki along with other small-screen stars, continued its promising growth trend. Renowned for her beautiful face, excellent acting skills, and charming personality, she enjoys immense popularity among young people in Japan. Additionally, the light-hearted style of "Tatakae" differs from previous Taiga dramas, attracting a large number of young viewers to what is usually an older audience demographic.

NHK's new Taiga drama "Tatakae" has seen a successful start, with the first three episodes averaging over twenty points in ratings. However, rumors have surfaced about discord between the two leading actresses, Aoi Miyazaki and Mao Takeda. According to insiders, Aoi Miyazaki has recently ordered that in all promotional events, she will not take photos or give interviews alongside Mao Takeda, who plays a key role. The reason is reportedly due to Takeda deviating from the original promotional plan by prematurely announcing her participation in the drama, overshadowing Miyazaki. There are also claims that Miyazaki looks down on Takeda's acting abilities yet still feels threatened by her potential to win major film awards.

On the other hand, Aoi Miyazaki appeared with Junichi Okada in Marunouchi yesterday to promote their new movie "Bloom in the Shade," meeting with a thousand fans. The two, appearing together for the first time, praised each other highly and expressed a desire to collaborate again.
