Enduring all kinds of hardships

The army was hunting and shot a wild boar, but it was snatched away by Wu Ma. The soldiers surrounded Wu Ma, but he fought them off and successfully escaped. On the other hand, Feng Nian brought his mother Pu Shi and his fiancée Sang Qing to the market to sell vegetables. During this time, Pu Shi was very harsh on Sang Qing, who endured everything without complaint. The village landlord Ning announced that the villagers would have to pay taxes from now on, causing great distress among the villagers.

Wu Ma took the wild boar to the market in exchange for a bag of rice, but encountered Ning's army, who demanded he pay taxes. Wu Ma refused to the death, angering Ning. On the other hand, Feng Nian often went up the mountain to find Wu Ma, expressing his desire to be friends with him, but Wu Ma, being solitary by nature, didn't say much.

Feng Nian injured his foot because of Wu Ma, who carried him down the mountain, but was scolded by Mi Pu for harming her son. Wu Ma's home was burned down by Ning, so he went to Ning's house to cause trouble and was attacked by everyone. Wu Ma had no choice but to kidnap Ning's son and lock him inside the house. At this moment, Feng Nian arrived and volunteered to persuade Wu Ma to release Ning's son.

Sang Qing knew that Feng Nian and Wu Ma were trapped inside the house, so she brought food inside. After eating, Wu Ma passed out as Sang Qing had secretly added sleeping medicine to the food to protect Feng Nian. Despite his injuries, Wu Ma managed to escape, and Feng Nian said he would help him flee the village. They reached the capital city and joined the army hoping to make a name for themselves, but when they reached the battlefield, they realized they had to kill Zi Gui and Cui Qiao's younger brother. Unable to do so, they helped Zi Gui and Cui Qiao escape instead.

Feng Nian's foolishness ruins reputation

After risking their lives to save the two women, Wu Ma and Feng Nian fled to an abandoned house; their dreams of becoming officials shattered, but Wu Ma did not lose heart and proposed to go to the capital city the next morning to try their luck. Feng Nian suggested they settle the two women first, but Wu Ma ignored him. That night, Wu Ma saw Cui Qiao washing clothes, but the impetuous Feng Nian had relations with her, making her his fiancée before they were officially married.

When Cui Qiao returned to the abandoned house, she found Zi Gui deeply saddened and tried hard to comfort her. It turned out the two women were half-sisters, and because Cui Qiao's mother was a servant, although she was the older sister, she was treated like a servant too. Zi Gui wanted to take revenge on the officer who betrayed her father, but Cui Qiao opposed it. In the morning, Wu Ma set off alone for the capital, and Feng Nian struggled to catch up. Cui Qiao discovered their plan to go to the capital and falsely claimed there was a bounty on the head of their enemy, prompting Wu Ma to decide to kill him and achieve great success. Meanwhile, Zi Gui attempted to secretly assassinate their enemy but was stopped by Wu Ma. Wu Ma killed someone in the street, which angered Duan Taibei, the master of the prestigious Canglong Sect in the capital, who wanted to arrest him. However, he also stated if Wu Ma could withstand three punches from him, he would let him go. Wu Ma, severely injured, used the Tai Chi technique taught by Shan Yue and managed to escape safely.

Mi Fengnian (played by Ma Guoming)

Age: About 28 years old

Personality: Values friendship, simple-minded, straightforward, lacks guile, has a simple mind and is easily influenced by others. Although he has great ambitions and wants to accomplish something significant, he always talks about it but never acts, starting things with great enthusiasm but finishing them poorly, being indecisive and cowardly. Though he has a sense of justice, he lacks courage and decisiveness, especially when it comes to matters of the heart, where he shows particular weakness and lack of determination, yet he falls in love easily. He was raised by his mother, being filial to her and following her instructions obediently. His inability to act independently has hurt the feelings of two women.

Background and experiences: Born into a farming family and grew up in Caishi Village, he was raised by his mother Mi Pushi since childhood, following her every word obediently, developing a dependent personality. His entire life path was arranged by his mother, including even the choice of his future wife, having already been decided by his mother to marry Sang Qing, an orphan adopted by the Mi family since childhood.

In his childhood, Fengnian wanted to be friends with Wu Ma but caused him trouble due to a misunderstanding, leading to constant self-reproach. As an adult, Fengnian still wanted to be Wu Ma's friend as compensation. Once, Wu Ma offended a wealthy man in the village and was forced to leave. Fengnian, driven by a sense of righteousness and youthful passion, left the village where he had lived for many years, setting off with Wu Ma, determined to make a name for himself!

Fengnian followed Wu Ma to join the army, thinking they could carve out a place in the world with their own hands, but due to not understanding the political situation, things did not go as planned, and both fame and fortune slipped through his fingers. At this point, Fengnian met a woman—Yan Cuiao. Cuiao was originally the illegitimate daughter of General Yan Baitao, who suffered a downfall after trusting a villain's advice, leading to a massacre. By accident, Fengnian and Wu Ma saved the two Yan sisters. Fengnian, full of youthful vigor, upon meeting the gentle and charming Cuiao, immediately became close with her, even having a relationship, completely forgetting Sang Qing, his fiancée waiting for him back home.

Although Fengnian got involved with Cuiao, he didn’t truly want to abandon Sang Qing. Due to his personality, he fell in love easily but was indecisive, finding it difficult to tell Cuiao that he already had a fiancée, thus taking things step by step.

Fengnian and Cuiao settled in the capital city, opening a small shop selling steamed buns. At this time, Fengnian was again full of ambition, thinking that being a small boss was also a form of accomplishment. Unfortunately, one’s nature is hard to change, and Fengnian's habit of starting strong but finishing weak reappeared. Staying in the small shop for too long, he began to feel bored. Cuiao noticed this and became somewhat angry, leading to minor quarrels between them.

At this moment, Sang Qing finally came looking for them. Facing the two women, Fengnian really didn’t know what to do. When Sang Qing learned that Fengnian had fallen for another, she left sorrowfully with Wu Ma, choosing to accompany him in practicing martial arts and stepping out of this love triangle.
