Orphan Wu Ma (Zhao Wenzhuo) grew up in the wilderness and learned Tai Chi from his master since he was young. The experience of being abandoned by his parents made him full of hatred for the world; to relieve Ma's lingering hatred, his master sacrificed himself.
To repay his master and fulfill his father's wish to promote martial arts, Ma embarked on a journey to pursue the highest realm of Tai Chi. Thus, he challenged the leader of the top sect Canglong Sect, Duan Xiaoxing (Louis Koo), but lost to him; his life henceforth aimed at defeating Xing. Moreover, the two inevitably fought again due to a woman Yan Zigui (Hui Kei-nam) and the ambitious southern expert Luqiu Ao (Guo Zhenghong).
On the other hand, the distance between Ma and his beloved Sang Qing (Mimi Wu) grew larger as he pursued his ideals...
Wu Ma took the wild boar to the market to exchange for a bag of rice, but encountered Ning Caizhu's army who demanded that he pay taxes. Wu Ma refused and offended Ning Caizhu. On the other side, Feng Nian often went to the mountain to find Wu Ma, indicating that he wanted to be friends with him, but Wu Ma, who had a secluded nature, didn't say much.
Feng Nian injured his foot because of Wu Ma, so Wu Ma carried him down the mountain, but was scolded by Mi Pu for harming her son. Wu Ma's house was burned down by Ning Caizhu, so Wu Ma went to Ning's house to cause trouble and was surrounded by many people. Wu Ma had no choice but to hold Ning Caizhu's son hostage and lock him inside the house. At this moment, Feng Nian arrived and voluntarily offered to persuade Wu Ma to release Ning's son.
Sang Qing knew that Feng Nian and Wu Ma were trapped in the house, so she brought food into the house. After eating, Wu Ma passed out, as Sang Qing had secretly put sleeping pills in the food to protect Feng Nian. Wu Ma narrowly escaped death and fled with injuries, while Feng Nian said he would help him escape the village. The two arrived in the capital and joined the army hoping to make something of themselves, but when they reached the battlefield, they realized they had to kill Zigui and Cuiao's younger brother, and couldn't bring themselves to do it, instead helping Zigui and Cuiao escape...
Feng Nian confusedly ruined someone's reputation
After risking their lives to save the two women, Wu Ma and Feng Nian fled to a dilapidated house; their dreams of an official career shattered, but Wu Ma did not lose heart and proposed to go to the capital early the next morning to try their luck. Feng Nian suggested settling the two women first, but Wu Ma ignored him. In the evening, Wu Ma saw Cuiao washing clothes, but the vigorous Feng Nian had a relationship with her, making Cuiao his fiancée.
After returning to the dilapidated house, Cuiao found Zigui extremely sad and tried hard to console her; originally, the two women were half-sisters with different mothers. Since Cuiao's mother was a servant, although she was the older sister, she was treated like a servant. Zigui wanted to deal with the officer who betrayed her father, but Cuiao opposed her. Early in the morning, Wu Ma set off for the capital alone, and Feng Nian worked hard to catch up; Cuiao discovered the two men wanted to go to the capital and claimed there was a reward for the head of an enemy, which made Wu Ma decide to kill this person for great merit. Meanwhile, Zigui wanted to secretly assassinate the enemy, but was stopped by Wu Ma; Wu Ma killed someone in broad daylight, catching the attention of Duan Taibei, the leader of the prestigious Canglong Sect in the capital, who wanted to capture him. But he also said that if Wu Ma could withstand his three punches, he would let him leave; Wu Ma used the Tai Chi taught by Shan Yue despite his severe injuries to escape safely.
The new mayor arrived, and the merchants wanted to give him expensive gifts, but he used them for disaster relief; Wu Ma was wanted for murder, but coincidentally met Sang Qing who came looking for Feng Nian and helped him escape arrest. However, someone informed the police chief Chai Wei that Sang Qing had been seen with Wu Ma, so he publicly interrogated Sang Qing, and Wu Ma turned himself in to save her.
Yan Cuiao (played by Carina Lau)
Age: About twenty-four years old
Personality: Gentle with a touch of coquetry, pitiable and frail, men always want to protect her. She is the illegitimate daughter of military commander Yan Baitao. Her mother died early, so she lived with her father's family but had a low status. Her half-sister Yan Zigui treats her like a maid, but she has never complained, accepting everything humbly and loving Zigui like her own sister. Regarding love, due to her mother's shadow, Cuiao insists on formal marriage and refuses to be a concubine, because in her life, she has always been beneath others. She yearns to be officially recognized as someone's wife and have her own family. To achieve this wish, she sometimes doesn't hesitate to use her beauty to retain a man's affection.
Background and Experiences: After the founding of the Republic, the political situation was unstable, and warlords vied for power. Yan Baitao's army lost its advantage, and Cuiao fled with her family. Unfortunately, due to incorrect intelligence, they were ambushed, and her parents and younger brother tragically died. Fortunately, Wu Ma and Mi Fengnian rescued Cuiao and her half-sister Zigui just in time.
Cuiao and Zigui, without any support, felt utterly lost. Cuiao only wished to find a trustworthy man to depend on and stop wandering. One day, Cuiao accidentally fell into the river, and Fengnian bravely saved her. They both got soaked, and Fengnian couldn't resist having a relationship with Cuiao. Cuiao thought Fengnian would take responsibility for her life and care for her and her sister, but she didn't know Fengnian already had a fiancée named Sang Qing.
Cuiao planned to find a place to live peacefully with Zigui, but Zigui was eager for revenge, and Cuiao couldn't dissuade her. Fearing the loss of her only close relative, Cuiao tricked Wu Ma into avenging Zigui. Unexpectedly, after succeeding, Wu Ma became a murderer sentenced to death, leaving Cuiao feeling guilty. However, to protect Zigui's safety, she remained resolute.
Cuiao was determined to become Fengnian's wife. When Zigui went to Shanghai alone to avoid forced marriage, Cuiao settled down in the capital with Fengnian. Cuiao inherited a secret recipe for herbal tea from her deceased mother, so she opened a small shop in the capital with Fengnian to make a living.
One day, Cuiao reunited with Zigui and found that Zigui had lost her memory and had become the cousin of Duan Xiaoxing, the young master of the 'Canglong Sect'. Weighing the pros and cons, Cuiao believed it was better for Zigui to stay with Xiaoxing than to restore her identity as Yan Zigui. So, Cuiao pretended not to know Zigui but still cared about her sister deeply. Later, when Zigui regained her memory, she asked Cuiao to keep her secret. Cuiao, with only Zigui as her remaining family member, naturally obeyed everything, deepening the bond between the sisters more than ever before.
