"Crossing the Shanhai Pass" tells a story of a Shandong family who were forced to leave home for living from the late Qing Dynasty to the outbreak of the September 18 Incident. It takes the complicated and rugged life of the protagonist Zhu Kaishan as the clue, and intersperses the tribulations and tests encountered by Zhu Kaishan's three sons on their way to Northeast China, who are of distinct characters and different fates. During the planning stage of the script, it was positioned as the story of little people becoming great heroes.
