Plot Introduction:
At the end of the Qing Dynasty in Zhoucun, Mr. Yang, the owner of Dehe Yong Cargo Store, lost his wife at an early age and only had one son, Ruiqing, who passed the imperial examination at the age of sixteen but refused to participate further due to dissatisfaction with the Qing government. He secretly fell in love with Guihua, the daughter of a brothel madam, and received enlightenment in science and democracy from Western missionary Clear.
The Zhoucun official family Wang monopolized the silk industry under the banner of "special operation by imperial decree." When Mr. Yang was away, Ruiqing and merchant Old Liu broke the rules to buy cocoons. To retaliate against Yang Ruiqing, Wang's son Xincheng set fire to the Yang family weaving room, causing the Yang family to go bankrupt completely. Mr. Yang could not bear the blow and died from illness.
Ruiqing fled to Shanghai and accidentally met Mr. Xia, becoming the assistant of Clear's younger brother Little Clear. He displayed extraordinary business talent, and Mr. Xia's daughter Zhiqin also developed feelings for Ruiqing.
Ruiqing sent letters and money back to Zhoucun to his apprentice Sisheng, asking him to pass them on to Guihua. However, Guihua had already married Firecracker Liu under her mother's coercion. Upon hearing the news, Ruiqing was heartbroken.
Ten years later, Zhoucun opened up as a port. Ruiqing and Zhiqin had already gotten married. Ruiqing planned to return to Zhoucun to start a factory and make a big move.
Ruiqing's plan to open a factory in Zhoucun faced joint resistance from Wang Xinchen and his cousin tea merchant Cui Guangxing. Ruiqing frequently used clever strategies, making Wang Xinchen overpay for useless land, bringing in the foreign Turkish bath, and taking over Wang's brothel and bathhouse businesses.
To retaliate against Yang Ruiqing, Wang Xinchen and Ruiqing's assistant Yang Lijun competed in the casino. Based on the probability principle in Western mathematics, Lijun made Wang Xinchen lose everything in the casino. However, Ruiqing did not hold it against Wang Xinchen and returned all the Wang family assets that were lost in the casino.
Wang Xinchen was convinced by Ruiqing, but Cui Guangxing insisted on fighting against Ruiqing. As a result, Cui Guangxing was defeated in the book house battle and tea price war, losing his strength.
A new magistrate arrived, but he turned out to be a corrupt official who indulged his nephew in wrongdoing. Ruiqing united with his business friends to catch Hu Magistrate smoking opium and allowing his nephew to injure people, driving Hu Magistrate out of Zhoucun.
After Hu Magistrate left, Ma Magistrate came. Greedy and cunning, he sent his fourth brother Ma Laosi to Zhoucun to build roads for profit. However, Ruiqing intentionally exposed his tricks, preventing him from exploiting the common people through road construction.
In order to accumulate wealth, Ma Magistrate colluded with Cui Guangxing, proposing to buy the Shanxi-Shaanxi Book House along with the Twelve Beauties of Jinling. Reluctantly, Ruiqing agreed to let Ma Magistrate stamp the county office seal to quickly raise shares and establish a porcelain factory.
Although Cui Guangxing bought the book house and the Twelve Beauties of Jinling, Ruiqing introduced movies, drawing the attention of the Zhoucun people, leading to Cui Guangxing's book house going bankrupt.
Ma Magistrate helped open a silk factory, but as he became familiar with production and sales, he betrayed Ruiqing, not only withholding the silk needed for Ruiqing's personal factory but also planning to expel Ruiqing and several shareholders from the factory. Ruiqing and Mr. Meng performed a double act, making Ma Magistrate pay four times the price to buy their shares.
Ma Magistrate's silk received recognition from Little Clear, who was about to make payment. However, Little Clear requested the brand authorization letter from Yang Ruiqing, leaving Cui Guangxing and Ma Laosi dumbfounded.
Cui Guangxing returned to Zhoucun and, after much pleading, managed to obtain the authorization letter. But upon returning to Shanghai, he discovered it was a warning letter written in English by Ruiqing's wife.
Goods piled up in the Shanghai warehouse, with high costs. At Ma Magistrate's request, Ruiqing and three others reinvested and stopped Ma Magistrate's attempt to expel Cui Guangxing, leaving Guangxing deeply moved.
The Qing Emperor abdicated. Ma Magistrate became the county head. Ruiqing sold the silk reeling factory to Ma Laosi and advised everyone to plan ahead. Meng Magistrate of Ruifuxiang ignored the advice and insisted on buying the power plant.
...
Ruiqing tearfully left Zhoucun, his hometown where he was born and raised, and this dry dock that had been prosperous for nearly two hundred years but now had become desolate.
