Plot Introduction:
In the late Qing Dynasty, in Zhoucun, Yang, the owner of Dehe Yong Goods Store, lost his wife at an early age and has only one son, Ruiqing, who passed the provincial examination at the age of sixteen. However, due to dissatisfaction with the Qing government, he refused to take further exams and secretly fell in love with Guihua, the daughter of a brothel owner, while being enlightened by Western missionary Clear about science and democracy.
The Zhoucun official Wang family monopolized the silk industry under the guise of "special operation by imperial decree." Taking advantage of his father's absence, Ruiqing broke the rules with the silk merchant Old Liu. To retaliate against Yang Ruiqing, Wang Xinchen, the son of the Wang family, set fire to the Yang family's weaving room, causing the Yang family to go bankrupt entirely. Unable to bear the shock, Mr. Yang became ill and passed away.
Ruiqing fled to Shanghai, where he accidentally met Mr. Xia and became the assistant of Clear's younger brother Xiao Clear, showcasing extraordinary business talent. Xia's daughter, Zhiqin, also developed feelings for Ruiqing.
Ruiqing sent letters and money back to Zhoucun to his clerk Sisheng, asking him to pass them on to Guihua. By then, however, Guihua had already been forced by her mother to marry Firecracker Liu. Upon hearing the news, Ruiqing was heartbroken.
Ten years later, Zhoucun opened up as a port. Ruiqing and Zhiqin had already become husband and wife. Ruiqing planned to return to Zhoucun to open a factory and make a big move.
Wang Xinchen and his cousin, tea merchant Cui Guangxing, jointly resisted Ruiqing's plan to open a factory in Zhoucun. Ruiqing frequently used clever tactics, making Wang Xinchen buy useless land at a high price and inviting the Twelve Beauties of Jinling from Nanjing, introducing foreign Turkish baths, which impacted Wang's brothel and bathhouse businesses.
To get revenge on Yang Ruiqing, Wang Xinchen and Ruiqing's assistant Yang Lijun challenged each other at the casino. Based on probability theory in Western mathematics, Lijun made Wang Xinchen lose all his fortune in the casino. However, Ruiqing didn't hold a grudge against Wang Xinchen and returned all the Wang family properties that were lost in the casino.
Wang Xinchen was conquered by Ruiqing, but Cui Guangxing insisted on fighting against Ruiqing until the end. As a result, Cui Guangxing was defeated by Ruiqing in the struggle over bookstores and the tea price war, severely weakening his power.
A new magistrate arrived, but turned out to be a corrupt official who indulged his nephew in committing wrongdoings. Ruiqing united with friends from the business community, catching Magistrate Hu smoking opium and indulging his nephew in injuring people, driving Magistrate Hu out of Zhoucun.
After Magistrate Hu left, another official named Ma arrived. This person was greedy and cunning, sending his fourth brother Ma Laosi to Zhoucun to repair roads and extort money. However, Ruiqing deliberately exposed his tricks, preventing him from exploiting the people during road repairs.
To extort money, Magistrate Ma colluded with Cui Guangxing, proposing to buy the Shanxi and Shaanxi bookstores along with the Twelve Beauties of Jinling. Reluctantly, Ruiqing agreed to let Magistrate Ma stamp the county office seal to quickly raise shares and build a porcelain factory.
Although Cui Guangxing bought the bookstore and the Twelve Beauties of Jinling, Ruiqing introduced movies, attracting the attention of the people of Zhoucun, leading to the bankruptcy of Cui Guangxing's bookstore.
Magistrate Ma helped open a silk factory, but as he became familiar with production and sales, he betrayed Ruiqing by not only withholding the silkworm cocoons needed for Ruiqing's personal factory but also planning to remove Ruiqing and several shareholders from the factory. Ruiqing and Mr. Meng performed a double act, making Magistrate Ma pay four times the price for their shares.
Magistrate Ma's silk received recognition from Xiao Clear, who was about to make a payment, but Xiao Clear proposed requiring Yang Ruiqing's brand authorization letter. This left Cui Guangxing and Ma Laosi dumbfounded.
Cui Guangxing returned to Zhoucun and, after much pleading, managed to obtain the authorization letter. However, upon returning to Shanghai, he discovered it was a cautionary letter written by Ruiqing's wife in English.
Goods piled up in the Shanghai warehouse with high costs. At Magistrate Ma's request, Ruiqing and three others reinvested and even stopped Magistrate Ma's attempt to expel Cui Guangxing. Guangxing was deeply moved.
The Qing emperor abdicated. Magistrate Ma became the county chief. Ruiqing sold the silk reeling factory to Ma Laosi and advised everyone to make early plans. Mr. Meng, the owner of Ruifuxiang, ignored the advice and insisted on buying the power plant.
...
Ruiqing tearfully left Zhoucun, his hometown that had nurtured him, and this prosperous dry dock that had lasted nearly two hundred years but now had fallen into decline.
