Old estate owner Amador passes away, and members of the Montalvo family gather from various places to attend the funeral. This includes the eldest son Felipe, his wife Constanza, the second son Bruno and his wife Fedra, the second daughter Sofia, and the youngest daughter Daniela. In his will, Amador declares that whichever grandson—Rodrigo or Aaron—has a son first will inherit all the Montalvo family's property. During the memorial service, the worker Gaviota catches Rodrigo's attention. Over subsequent encounters, Gaviota and Rodrigo fall in love. Rodrigo and Gaviota become deeply involved, agreeing to marry on March 21st of the following year. Before then, Rodrigo must return to London to complete his studies.
Aaron is promiscuous and, in order to secure the inheritance, he instructs his fiancée Minerva to quickly prepare for their wedding in Mexico City. However, upon returning to London, Aaron indulges in nightly revelries. Gaviota discovers she is pregnant but cannot reach Rodrigo no matter what she tries. In her distress, photographer Rolando tells Gaviota he can help her go to Europe as a model. Gaviota is delighted at this opportunity. Upon arriving in Paris, Gaviota realizes she has been sold into a brothel. She escapes through sheer determination. A kind-hearted boss named Benvenuto takes her in and funds her trip to London to find Rodrigo. As soon as Gaviota arrives in London, she encounters Rodrigo, whom she has missed day and night. Unfortunately, while crossing the road, she gets hit by a car. She miscarries, leaving her heartbroken. Meanwhile, Rodrigo returns to Mexico hastily due to his father’s sudden death. In Mexico, Rodrigo meets Isadora, who falls deeply in love with him.
While lying in the hospital bed, Gaviota resolves to regain strength. She recuperates while learning various languages from Sister Felicity. At Aaron and Minerva’s wedding, Isadora boldly expresses her love for Rodrigo, which he rejects, telling her he loves someone else. After the father's funeral, Rodrigo learns that Gaviota went to Europe to work as a prostitute. He believes it to be true and is tormented with pain. To forget Gaviota, he decides to propose to Isadora. Rodrigo and Isadora get married on March 21st, but on their wedding night, Rodrigo gets drunk and shows no intention of facing the devoted Isadora.
After recovering, Gaviota travels a long distance back to the estate only to discover Rodrigo is already married. When Rodrigo learns Gaviota has returned, he loses interest in spending his honeymoon with Isadora and immediately finds Gaviota to question why she went to Europe. Enraged, Gaviota drives him out. Gaviota shares her European ordeal with Clarita, who is both saddened and furious. Clarita recounts Gaviota's story to Rodrigo. Regretful, Rodrigo attempts to seek Gaviota's forgiveness but is rejected. Determined, he decides to divorce Isadora, but the next day he finds that Gaviota and her mother have quietly left the estate.
Gaviota and her mother arrive in Mexico City, where Mrs. Jose helps them find a place to live. Gaviota works as a receptionist at a hotel. Her proficiency in multiple languages impresses Manager Maximino but incites jealousy from Human Resources Director Flavia. Rodrigo proposes divorce to Isadora and sends people everywhere to look for Gaviota, which infuriates Isadora. Subsequently, Isadora lies about falling off a horse and being injured, deceiving Rodrigo into coming back to her side. Learning about Rodrigo and Gaviota having a child, Isadora becomes more anxious and reveals this to Minerva.
Upon discovering that Rodrigo and Gaviota once had a child, Aaron panics but continues his promiscuous ways, urging Minerva to hurry up with conceiving while still secretly seeing other women. To build a career, Gaviota enrolls in correspondence courses and buys her mother a sewing machine and television through installment payments. Time flies, and before long, it has been over a year since Gaviota left the estate. Rodrigo has yet to give up...
