In 1953, [1] PLA company commander Xiao Jianfei, overseas returnee Xie Yuchen, and former Nationalist general He Wenbo who joined the Communist side, gathered together under the leadership of General Mu Shengzhong to work hard on building the Qinghai-Tibet highway. They made a vow to build the Qinghai-Tibet railway. However, they went through a series of natural disasters and man-made calamities, and the project was shelved. Their sons, in 1973, worked tirelessly with the railway troops to extend the Qinghai-Tibet railway to Golmud.
