The 2010 CCTV-1 TV Series "Older Brother's Happiness" Complete 41 Episodes
This drama aims to explore people's concept of happiness in today's society. Through laughter and satire, it carries profound meaning, allowing the audience to reflect on the strange realities of modern society and reconsider the restless mindset of seeking quick success. It uses a small character's "non-action" and "silent teaching" to interpret the most simple and pure view of happiness.
Fu Xijiangu, known as Fu Lao Da, having lost his parents at an early age, he raised his three younger brothers and one sister alone, sending them all to universities in Beijing. When his siblings grew up and became successful in their careers, Fu Lao Da had already missed his prime years: his marriage failed due to infertility, and after being laid off, he became a foot therapist. However, he faced everything with enough optimism, still holding onto his ideals for career and life — becoming a masseur and a father. By chance, he met Lele, a child with autism, and they immediately hit it off. Lele's mother Mei Hao was abandoned by her husband and was raising Lele alone, falling into financial difficulties. Fu Lao Da saved Mei Hao who attempted suicide, recognized Lele as his godson, and took Mei Hao as his apprentice, teaching her foot therapy. The three of them thus relied on each other, living a peaceful life in a small city in Northeast China.
At this time, Fu's siblings living in Beijing returned to their hometown in Northeast China together to relocate the graves of their long-deceased parents. Fu Ji'an, the second eldest brother, sent the administrative director of his company, Xin Wen, back to their hometown earlier to arrange the itinerary. Fu Lao Da was cheated in the second-hand mobile phone market, buying a stolen phone, which happened to be Xin Wen's. When Fu's siblings reunited in the old house, the police came to investigate the matter of the phone. Ji'an felt humiliated, and in anger, fired Xin Wen. The younger siblings all thought that their older brother was not happy, and did not want him to continue doing the "lowly job" of pressing people's feet. They hoped to change his lifestyle and decided to take their older brother to live in Beijing. However, Fu Lao Da did not think he was unhappy, but worried about delaying his siblings' affairs, so he decided to temporarily comply with their arrangements and enjoy a few days of good fortune in Beijing. After arranging for Mei Hao and her son, Fu Lao Da followed his siblings to Beijing.
After arriving in Beijing, Ji'an arranged for his older brother to stay at his home. Due to differences in living habits and concepts, there were various clashes between them. While visiting his younger brother's company, Fu Lao Da coincidentally met Xin Wen who was preparing to resign. Out of guilt, Fu Lao Da made great efforts to retain Xin Wen and persuaded her boyfriend Zhang Qiang not to break up with her because of her resignation. A series of discomforts made Fu Lao Da feel that he should return to Shuncheng to lead his own life. Just as he was preparing to leave, Mei Hao suddenly arrived in Beijing with Lele. It turned out that Lele's condition had worsened, and the manager of the foot therapy center asked her to take the child to Beijing to find Fu Lao Da.
In order for Lele to receive rehabilitation training at a kindergarten for autistic children in Beijing, Fu Lao Da decided to stay in Beijing, rented a house for Mei Hao and her son, and started working at his younger brother's company to earn money. From initially feeling out of place to gradually discovering that all the white-collar workers in the company had varying degrees of health problems, he began to adjust their bodies and promote wellness. Fu Lao Da also found Mei Hao a job at a foot therapy shop. In their daily lives, they developed a deep and sincere affection for each other, evolving from master and apprentice to lovers. However, their relationship was strongly opposed by Fu's siblings.
The younger siblings, led by the second brother, believed that their older brother would not be happy with Mei Hao, who had a sick child and worked as a foot therapist, and thus launched a "rescue" operation for their older brother. They tried to matchmake their older brother with Xin Wen, a high-level white-collar worker. First, they arranged for their older brother to work under Xin Wen, then let Xin Wen personally teach their older brother how to drive, etc., creating opportunities for the two. Xin Wen clearly understood the situation, but treated it like a task at work. However, in a series of hilarious events, Xin Wen was gradually moved by Fu Lao Da's kindness, attentiveness, and sincerity. This seemingly strong woman who craved tenderness inside gradually understood Fu Lao Da, and the two gradually became good friends.
Due to the continuous interference from Fu Lao Da's younger siblings, Mei Hao had no choice but to leave Fu Lao Da. Amidst her sorrow, she found new opportunities and choices in the dazzling metropolis. She began to re-examine her relationship with Fu Lao Da. Mrs. Xia, the elderly lady she massaged, liked Mei Hao's gentle character very much and wanted her to be her daughter-in-law. Faced with the resistance of reality and a seemingly better choice, Mei Hao went through a painful struggle in her heart.
In stark contrast to Fu Lao Da, who was honest and straightforward, his several younger siblings had completely different ways of life. The second brother, Fu Ji'an, was the mainstay of the Fu family and the most successful person in the Fu family. However, in reality, he was a very fragile person who acted tough despite inner pain, leading a superficially glamorous upper-class life. Due to the betrayal of his ex-wife in the past, he had become disillusioned with love and regarded money as the most real thing. He maintained a nominal marriage with Ming Yue, a former model. Vanity and flamboyance were her biggest traits; everything was done with a show of strength, pretending indifference while actually harboring true feelings. Later, due to a broken capital chain, he went bankrupt. With the help of Ming Yue and Fu Lao Da, he overcame difficulties and returned to his family; the third brother, Fu Jizhao, was a civil servant living under the shadow of his wife. Although he had no ambition for political advancement, he lived under the pressure of his wife Xiao Nan, who hoped he would succeed, causing tension in their marital relationship; the fourth brother, Ji Xing, was a third-rate actor struggling in the Beijing entertainment circle. Chasing vanity, he took out a loan to buy a luxury villa, exhausting himself to repay the loan. Even when injured or sick, he didn't forget to rush to performances to make money. His wife Miao Miao, pregnant, didn't dare to tell him. Eventually, with the help of Fu Lao Da, he returned to reality, woke up from his dream of luxury villas, and had his own child; the youngest sister, Fu Jiping, originally lived a comfortable life teaching piano students, but became obsessed with the stock market, betting all her assets on stocks, almost losing everything. Thereafter, she gave up striving and only wanted to marry a rich man, ignoring the affection around her. In the end, Fu Lao Da helped her regain true love and find happiness.
In these families, Fu Lao Da witnessed these perplexing phenomena while also enduring the "education" from his family members. However, with his sincerity and positive optimistic attitude towards life, he helped these self-proclaimed "happy" and "pursuing happiness" family members return to reality. Everyone found their true goals in life and lived happily ever after.
