The complete 34 episodes of the TV series "Beauty in the North", based on the revolutionary struggle during the early Republic of China era.
The TV series tells a story set in the early years of the Republic of China when the newly appointed Minister of Education of the Beiyang Government, Xia Xizun, lost his two children from his previous marriage while traveling to take up his post in Beijing. The siblings grew up with their adoptive parents through many hardships. The beautiful sister had to find ways to survive in difficult circumstances, while her brother, influenced by new ideas at school, embarked on a revolutionary path of resistance. There is also a poem with the same title, "Beauty in the North."
In May 1925, during the rule of the Beiyang warlords, there was chaos everywhere. Xia Xizun, an official of the Ministry of Education, was traveling by train to Beijing with his new wife and his children from his previous marriage. His daughter JiPing was eight years old, and his son ZiJian was only six. On the train, Xia Xizun was enthusiastically talking to his new wife about Jinan, where his father had once operated a tea business, and where he had lived as a child. He had special feelings for Jinan. When the train passed through Jinan, a crew member apologetically informed Xia Xizun that due to the arrival of the new Shandong governor Zhang Zongchang, the whole city was under martial law, and the train would temporarily stop running to allow Zhang's special train to pass. To comfort his longing for Jinan and to foster a bond between his new wife and the children, he persuaded his wife to get off the train and explore Jinan, known as a place of art and culture. After many years, Jinan had become a bustling city with shops lined up closely, crowded with people. Large theaters, teahouses, and book stalls were scattered like stars, filled with music and songs, showcasing a vibrant urban landscape.
At the Qing Shun Teahouse, Xia Xizun became absorbed in the Shandong drum music and did not want to leave. JiPing, who did not want to stay with her stepmother, asked to take ZiJian out to play, which Xia Xizun agreed to without hesitation. JiPing led ZiJian away happily, wandering further and further. JiPing, hearing folk songs for the first time, was deeply attracted. Just as the two children were playing happily, Governor Zhang Zongchang's convoy happened to pass by, causing a commotion among the crowd. JiPing, unable to control herself, was swept away with ZiJian by the crowd. Xia Xizun, realizing the chaos on the street, remembered his children and rushed out but could only watch helplessly as JiPing and her brother disappeared in the crowd. JiPing tightly held ZiJian's hand, but after the commotion subsided, they could not find their way back.
ZiJian, frightened, clung to his sister. JiPing's cries for help drew the attention of a passerby. Thinking she had found a savior, JiPing told the person that she had been separated from her father and wanted to go to the New Market to find him. The person claimed he would take them there, but it turned out to be a human trafficker.
Xia Xizun frantically searched for his children but failed. He sought help from Zhang Zongchang, who was furious about the disruption of his entry ceremony and ignored Xia Xizun's plea. By then, JiPing and ZiJian had already boarded the human trafficker's vehicle. As they passed by Zhang's mansion, Xia Xizun seemed to hear JiPing's voice but was interrupted by a soldier delivering a message. With no time to spare, Xia Xizun missed the chance to reunite with his children.
The children were taken to the human trafficker's home. Realizing they had been kidnapped, JiPing hugged her brother tightly, suddenly growing up in an instant. At the human trafficker's house, JiPing showed no fear, resisting fiercely while looking for an opportunity to escape.
Xia Xizun's search proved fruitless, and with urgent demands from Beijing, he considered giving up his position but was dissuaded by his wife. Before taking office, he vowed to return to Jinan to find his children.
The human trafficker made the children change into local clothes and took them to the Shanshuigou market to look for buyers. Carefully, JiPing hid her original clothes. The human trafficker claimed poverty as the reason for selling the children. Just as ZiJian was about to be sold, JiPing lunged forward, hugging her brother and shouting that they were human traffickers and would report anyone who dared buy them. The human trafficker beat and cursed JiPing, but she showed no fear. Suddenly, JiPing saw a kind-looking, neatly dressed elder nearby and clung to his leg like finding a lifeline. The elder, named Wang Dafu, owned a steamed bun shop in Jianzi Alley. He was driving a donkey cart to buy grain at the market. JiPing clung to Wang Dafu, begging him to take the siblings home. After much hesitation, the kind-hearted elder spent all eleven silver dollars meant for grain on buying the children from the human trafficker. Nervously, he took the children home, worrying about how to deal with his hot-tempered wife.
