The television phenomenon American Idol returns for its ninth season in January. This hit talent competition series hosted by Ryan Seacrest crowns a new solo singer as the "American Idol" based on audience votes.

Each year, thousands of people from across the country audition with the hope of becoming the next American Idol. Judges Simon Cowell, Kara DioGuardi, and Randy Jackson will select the semi-finalists who will perform weekly on stage before a national TV audience. While the judges critique each performance, it is the viewers who decide whether contestants advance or are eliminated through phone and text message votes immediately following each episode, with results revealed during the following night's show.
Varied themes such as country music, pop hits of the 21st century, and Elvis songs add excitement to the competition. Guest performances and mentorship from legendary artists like Tony Bennett, Jennifer Lopez, Martina McBride, and Bon Jovi enhance the program’s appeal. These superstar guests not only share their expertise with the contestants but also introduce audiences to different musical styles.
The finale pits two finalists against each other, with the winner receiving the title of American Idol and a lucrative contract. Past winners including Kelly Clarkson, Ruben Studdard, Fantasia Barrino, Carrie Underwood, Taylor Hicks, Jordin Sparks, David Cook, and newly crowned Kris Allen have all become major stars in the entertainment industry.
