The full 34 episodes of the TV series "There Is A Beauty In The North" are based on the revolutionary struggle during the Republic of China era.

The series tells the story of the early years of the Republic of China, when the new Ministry of Education official Xia Xizun's children from his previous marriage were separated and grew up in different households. The sister, having grown into a beautiful young woman, had to seek survival strategies amidst societal pressures, while her brother, influenced by new ideas at school, embarked on a revolutionary path of resistance. There is also a poem with the same title, "There Is A Beauty In The North."

In May 1925, during the rule of the Beiyang warlords, chaos reigned. Ministry of Education official Xia Xizun was traveling by train to Beijing with his new wife and his two children from his previous marriage. His daughter Jiping was eight years old, and his son Zijian was only six. On the train, Xia Xizun enthusiastically discussed Jinan with his new wife, as his father had once operated a tea business in Jinan, where Xia Xizun had lived, creating a special bond with the city. As the train passed through Jinan, the crew apologetically informed Xia Xizun that due to the new Shandong supervisor Zhang Zongchang's arrival, the entire city was under martial law, and the train would temporarily stop to allow Zhang Zongchang's special train to pass. To soothe his longing for Jinan and to foster a bond between his new wife and children, he persuaded his wife to disembark and explore Jinan, known for its artistic culture. After many years, Jinan had become bustling with shops, crowded streets, and numerous theaters and teahouses filled with music and vibrant urban life.

At Qing Shun Teahouse, Xia Xizun became captivated by the Shandong drum performances and allowed Jiping to take Zijian out to play, not wanting them to be bored. Jiping, hearing folk songs for the first time, was deeply attracted. While the children were enjoying themselves, Zhang Zongchang's convoy passed by, causing chaos among the crowd. Jiping, holding onto Zijian, was swept away by the throng. Xia Xizun, realizing the commotion, rushed to the streets but could only watch helplessly as Jiping and Zijian disappeared into the crowd. Jiping tightly held Zijian's hand, but after the chaos subsided, they were lost.

Zijian, frightened, clung to his sister. Her cries drew the attention of a passerby whom Jiping mistook for a savior. She told him they had lost their father and needed to find him at the New Market. This person offered to lead them there but turned out to be a child trafficker. Despite Xia Xizun's frantic search, he failed to find the children and sought Zhang Zongchang's assistance. Zhang Zongchang, already upset about his procession being disrupted, ignored Xia Xizun's plea. Meanwhile, Jiping and Zijian were already on the trafficker's vehicle, passing by Zhang's residence just as Xia Xizun thought he heard Jiping's voice. However, distracted by soldiers delivering news, Xia Xizun missed the opportunity to rescue his children.

The children were taken to the trafficker's home. Realizing their situation, Jiping embraced her brother protectively, showing sudden maturity. At the trafficker's place, she remained defiant, resisting fiercely while seeking opportunities to escape. Xia Xizun's search proved fruitless, and with pressure mounting from Beijing, he considered resigning from his post, though his wife dissuaded him. Before assuming his position, he vowed to return to Jinan to find his children.

The trafficker dressed the children in local clothes and took them to the Shuishanguo market to find buyers, but Jiping cleverly hid her original clothes. Using the excuse of poverty, the trafficker attempted to sell the children. When Zijian was about to be sold, Jiping lunged forward, hugging her brother and shouting that they were traffickers, warning anyone who dared buy them that she would report them to the authorities. Undeterred by the trafficker's beatings, Jiping spotted a kind-looking, neatly dressed elder nearby and clung to his leg like finding a lifeline. The elder, named Wang Dafu, owned a steamed bun shop in Jiange Alley and was on his way to buy grain. Jiping pleaded with him to buy them. Touched by her desperation, the kind-hearted Wang Dafu used all his money, eleven silver dollars originally intended for grain, to purchase the children, anxiously bringing them home while contemplating how to face his hot-tempered wife.
