"The Pacific War" is a high-stakes gamble, with a production cost of $223 million, which is equivalent to twice the investment of "Band of Brothers." In 2007, HBO officially approved the plan for "The Pacific War," and began promoting it aggressively in 2009. However, the president of HBO stated that they did not set revenue or viewership targets for this series; they just wanted to use this series to enhance HBO's global image and continue building the war drama brand of "Band of Brothers."
The Battle of Peleliu will be the focus
The Battle of Peleliu will be the key part of "The Pacific War," taking up one-quarter of the time to tell the story, while the Battle of Iwo Jima takes up less than an hour. The beaches and jungles of Peleliu can well display the true horror experienced by soldiers during World War II.
In addition, another consideration is that renowned director Clint Eastwood has already made two films about the Battle of Iwo Jima, "Flags of Our Fathers" and "Letters from Iwo Jima." Spielberg said, "Clint has explored the Battle of Iwo Jima from many different angles, so Iwo Jima is no longer the focus of our series."
