Plot Summary:

Patrick Jane (Golden Globe winner Simon Baker, "The Devil Wears Prada") used to regularly publish various articles about mental illness and supernatural sensations in the media and was a regular guest on TV talk shows, presenting himself as a psychological expert. But this "semi-celebrity" himself admits that his so-called "supernatural abilities" were purely a hoax - although his powers of observation and perception are far stronger than others.

Now, after "retiring" from the "celebrity circle," Jane has become an independent consultant for the California Bureau of Investigation's (CBI) special case investigation unit. He uses his "extrasensory" strengths to solve multiple high-profile difficult and mysterious cases, with his astonishing efficiency and success record causing many to call him a "miracle worker." However, within the bureau, everyone knows Jane's true nature - he lacks discipline and doesn't like following rules.

Strict and by-the-book Senior Agent Teresa Lisbon (Robin Tunney, "Prison Break") finds Jane very frustrating - on one hand, she openly opposes Jane, thinking he is hypocritical, narcissistic, flashy, likes showing off, and does not want him in her team. She particularly hates Jane's lack of distinction between public and private matters, believing he will one day threaten everyone's safety. On the other hand, she cannot deny that Jane's role is irreplaceable, and his judgment is very valuable to his colleagues.

Lisbon's capable subordinates include the intelligent Kimball Cho (Tim Kang, "Rambo") and the clumsy Wayne Rigsby (Owain Yeoman, "The Nine"), as well as a completely inexperienced rookie, Grace Van Pelt (Amanda Righetti, "The O.C."). Although Grace also feels that Jane's laid-back behavior poses a threat to everyone, she sincerely admires Jane's investigative skills and his irresistible male charm.

In the first episode, the daughter of a couple (Steven Culp, Gail O'Grady) mysteriously disappears, with all the incriminating evidence pointing to the troublemaking boy next door. After merely "casually strolling" around the victim's house, Jane points out that the girl's father is the real culprit. This isn't the first time Jane hasn't followed standard procedures, and the result is surprising. An angry Lisbon suspends Jane from duty.

Two weeks later, Lisbon takes on a new case - the wife of a golfer and her doctor are murdered in Palm Springs. Once again, Jane volunteers to "help" his beautiful boss solve the case. In reality, what truly interests Jane are the traces left by the serial killer "Red John" at the scene - a smiley face drawn on the victim's palm. Jane seems to have some connection with this "Red John" - it was because of "Red John" that Jane completely bid farewell to his previous frivolous life and exited the famous talk show that made him world-famous.

Suspects emerge one after another... Who is the murderer? Is it the golfer himself who had an affair? Is it the brother who had an affair with his wife? Or is it the doctor's colleague who embezzled funds? Has "Red John" really returned? These questions will gradually uncover the mask of Patrick Jane, revealing the real him to the audience: someone with a sense of urgency but exhausted; full of hope but with a broken heart; extraordinarily intelligent but filled with fear.
