Plot Introduction:

"The Women in the Big House" revolves around the destinies of five women surrounding a man in a feudal large family during the Republic of China period, gradually revealing the great conspiracy and traps hidden within two families entangled in grudges and emotions. The plot is filled with suspense, each element intricately connected, telling the legendary story of the rise and fall, joy and sorrow of these five women.

As "The Women in the Big House" leaves an indelible impression on people, the intricate and complex storyline tugs at the audience's heartstrings. The portrayal of "Fourth Concubine" Zhang Wenjun by actress Li Xinyu from Huayi Brothers evokes tears from many viewers due to her gentle kindness, while others feel indignation towards her constant submission.

The wealthy Bai family patriarch who runs a money shop in the city was kidnapped and rescued through the intervention of the influential Lin family in the area. Grateful, Bai brought his 15-year-old only son Bai Ziyi to thank the Lin family, but was forced to agree to an unreasonable request from Lin’s patriarch, marrying Bai Ziyi to Lin's eldest daughter Lin Yanzhao who was eight years older than him. A contract was established: if Lin Yanzhao could not bear children, Bai Ziyi would have no right to choose his own partner; instead, Lin Yanzhao would be responsible for selecting his concubines, and any sons born would be raised under Lin Yanzhao's name. To repay the Lin family for saving their lives, the Bai family helplessly accepted the harsh conditions set by the Lin family. However, they were unaware that all this was part of the Lin family's grand conspiracy to ultimately swallow up the Bai family's ancestral business.

Lin Yanzhao had been married into the Bai family for over a decade but failed to bear any children for the Bai family. In order to control Bai Ziyi and solidify her position in the Bai household, Lin Yanzhao invoked ancestral rules and arranged for one of her distant relatives, Yu Meilan, to be forcefully taken as Bai Ziyi's concubine.

Soon after, Yu Meilan bore Bai Ziyi a girl. Lin Yanzhao orchestrated a plan to switch the baby, replacing the girl with a boy named Wang'er, raising him under her name according to the Bai family's old rules. She also arranged for her younger brother Lin Wangxing to work at the Bai family's money shop. Together inside and out, they conspired to create trouble when Bai Ziyi was absent from the money shop, squeezing out and oppressing the upright elder Li Manager who had worked faithfully in the Bai family's money shop for decades. They devised ways to transfer actual control of the money shop to Lin Wangxing, aiming to take over the Bai family's money shop.

To further consolidate her position in the Bai family courtyard, Lin Yanzhao used her dowry maid Xiangling, employing both soft and hard tactics against the other concubines, playing double-faced tricks. A farce of mutual deception unfolded between the mistresses and servants. However, faced with the cunning Lin Yanzhao, Xiangling and the concubines' dreams of becoming the main mistress of the courtyard came to naught.

In the drama, Mrs. Lin Yanzhao symbolizes feudal forces. Relying on the fact that the Lin family saved the Bai family, she openly clings to the so-called ancestral rules of the Bai family, manipulating Bai Ziyi and attempting to control everything in the Bai family. Secretly, however, she colludes with her younger brother Lin Wangxing, using the fake mute flower worker to manipulate the Bai family courtyard, aiming to swallow up the Bai family's ancestral business.

In the drama, Master Bai Ziyi undergoes a transformation process from confusion to clarity, from submission to resistance. Initially weak, he succumbs to the authority of the ancestral rules and the might of his wife who is eight years older than him, passively allowing himself to be manipulated. For the continuation of the Bai family lineage and the prosperity of the family business, he reluctantly agrees to marry the person chosen by Lin Yanzhao as his concubine. But after being deceived and fooled multiple times, he realizes Lin Yanzhao's sinister intentions. With reminders and help from Manager Li and Aunt Yuan, he gathers his strength. After Lin Yanzhao's conspiracy is exposed,

He reflects deeply, realizing that his adherence to outdated ideas of continuing the family line through male offspring can only make him a sacrifice to feudal teachings. He angrily burns the ancestral rules, breaks free from Lin Yanzhao's control, and confronts her head-on. Inspired by Third Concubine Yuncail's words about "Hua Mulan taking her father's place in the army, showing that women can be as capable as men," he discards the feudal notion that only male descendants can inherit the family business. He abandons the ancestral home, completely severing ties with the old feudal marriage system. He leaves the Bai family courtyard with Yuncai, who shares his aspirations, and their two daughters, starting a new life.

Those who repeatedly commit injustice will surely perish. Despite all her scheming, Lin Yanzhao's plans come to nothing. Her conspiracy to devour the Bai family's ancestral business fails, and she ends up in a tragic situation, losing both wealth and family, left utterly alone.
