TV series "There Is A Beauty In The North" 34 full episodes, with the theme of the revolutionary struggle during the Republic of China era.
The name of the TV series tells the story of the early Republic of China, when the children of Xia Xizun, a newly appointed official of the Education Department of the Beiyang Government, were separated from their parents and grew up under the care of their adoptive parents. The beautiful sister had to seek survival in the cracks, while the brother, influenced by new ideas at school, embarked on a revolutionary path of resistance. There is also a poem with the same name called "There Is A Beauty In The North."
In May 1925, during the period of the Beiyang warlords' rule, chaos reigned. Official Xia Xizun of the Ministry of Education was traveling by train to Beijing for his new post with his newlywed wife and his two children from his previous marriage. Daughter JiPing was eight years old, and son ZiJian was only six. On the train, Xia Xizun was enthusiastically talking to his new wife about Jinan, where his father used to run a tea business and he lived with his father. He had special feelings for Jinan. When the train passed through Jinan, a crew member apologetically informed Xia Xizun that due to the appointment of the new Shandong supervisor Zhang Zongchang, the whole city was under martial law to let Zhang Zongchang's special train pass, and the train would temporarily stop. To comfort his longing for Jinan and to foster affection between his new wife and children, he persuaded his wife to get off the train and visit Jinan, known as Qu Mountain and Art Sea. After many years, Jinan had become bustling with shops lined up closely, and the streets were crowded with people. Grand theaters, teahouses, and storytelling booths were scattered like stars, filled with music and songs, presenting a vibrant urban landscape.
At Qing Shun Teahouse, Xia Xizun became absorbed in Shandong drum music and didn't want to leave. JiPing, unwilling to be with her stepmother, decided to take ZiJian out to play. Preoccupied with the performance, Xia Xizun agreed. JiPing and ZiJian wandered further and further away, captivated by the folk tunes they heard for the first time. As they played happily, coincidentally, Zhang Zongchang's convoy passed by, causing a commotion among the crowd. JiPing helplessly carried ZiJian and was swept away by the throng. When Xia Xizun learned of the turmoil in the street, he rushed out but could only watch helplessly as JiPing and her brother disappeared in the crowd. JiPing tightly held ZiJian's hand, but when the crowd dispersed, they lost their way back.
ZiJian was both frightened and crying, so JiPing hugged her younger brother tightly. Her cries drew the attention of someone. Thinking she had encountered a savior, young JiPing told the person they had been separated from their father and needed to go to the New Market to find him. This person invited them to follow, promising to take them to the New Market. JiPing was delighted but didn't realize they had met a human trafficker.
Xia Xizun frantically searched for his children without success and sought help from Zhang Zongchang. Zhang Zongchang, furious over the disruption of his entrance ceremony, ignored Xia Xizun's plea. By this time, JiPing and ZiJian had already been taken onto the human trafficker's vehicle. As they passed by Zhang's residence, Xia Xizun seemed to hear JiPing's voice, but just then, soldiers from Zhang's residence came to report. Xia Xizun, preoccupied, missed the chance to rescue JiPing and her brother.
The children were taken to the human trafficker's home. Upon realizing they had been abducted, JiPing tightly embraced her younger brother, seemingly maturing instantly. In the human trafficker's home, JiPing showed no fear and continued to resist while seeking opportunities to escape. Xia Xizun's search proved fruitless. Urged by Beijing and reluctant to abandon his position, he vowed to return to Jinan to find his children before assuming his post.
The human trafficker made the children wear local clothes and took them to the Shanshui Gou market to look for buyers. Carefully, JiPing hid her original clothes. The human trafficker claimed poverty as a reason for selling the children. Just as ZiJian was about to be bought by someone, JiPing rushed forward, hugging her brother tightly and shouting that they were human traffickers, warning anyone who dared buy them that she would report it to the authorities. The human trafficker beat and cursed JiPing, but she remained fearless. Suddenly, JiPing saw a kind-looking, neatly dressed elder not far away. She clung to the elder's leg like a lifeline. The elder was named Wang Dafu, who ran a steamed bun shop in the scissors alley. He was driving a donkey cart to buy grain at the market. JiPing clung tightly to Wang Dafu, begging him to buy the siblings and take them home. The kind-hearted elder hesitated repeatedly, finally giving all eleven silver dollars he had intended for grain to the human trafficker, anxiously taking the children home and pondering how to deal with his hot-tempered wife.
