Introduction to the plot of "Shanghai Shanghai":
At the end of 1911, after the Wuchang Uprising broke out and just before the liberation of Shanghai, a young man named Liu Gongzheng who had returned from studying abroad to inherit his family business, along with two other youths - Tong Guangfu, a revolutionary party member with a mission who had returned to China, and Herman, a British youth who came alone to Shanghai for survival - arrived in Shanghai on the same ship. From then on, their lives and struggles began in this Paris of the East, Shanghai.
After disembarking, in order to protect Tong Guangfu, who was wanted by the Qing government, Liu Gongzheng himself was arrested by the Shanghai governor and taken to the Da Xin stage opened by his father where he was about to be beheaded as an example. At the critical moment, an old man with white hair and a young woman with a red face appeared and saved him. The old man was a high-ranking eunuch of the Qing Dynasty carrying a large sum of money on an overseas mission, and the young woman was Han Rubin, a "female scholar" who had just been redeemed from a brothel by him. Thus began the decades-long love-hate relationship between Liu Gongzheng and Han Rubin, filled with both empathy and repulsion, misunderstanding and understanding, separation and reunion.
Han Rubin was a unique woman with both chivalrous spirit and eccentric temperament, her unusual background shaping her unique character and destiny. Love drove her to the point of obsession, and hatred gnawed at her soul. To a great extent, Liu Gongzheng's successes and failures were due to her presence. She could not marry Liu Gongzheng, yet she loved him deeply; because of her deep love, she also harbored deep resentment. Often, it was her actions that determined Liu Gongzheng's rise and fall at crucial moments.
Money and beauties, peaches and coppers, are the two most prominent colors of Shanghai. And the sentiment that opposes money, and the righteousness that stands against desire, become the highlights amidst these two colors.
The righteous path and the criminal underworld, the government and the gangs, are the two opposing yet interwoven extremes of old Shanghai. Due to the special social ecology of the concessions, Gu Yecheng, Liu Gongzheng's childhood friend, maneuvered smoothly between the righteous path and the criminal underworld, being both ruthless and generous, corrupt yet principled. He successfully used the concessions as a breeding ground to transform from an insignificant little thug into a famous and influential Shanghai tycoon over several decades. To a great extent, Liu Gongzheng's life trajectory intertwined with this figure from the criminal underworld.
