The 2010 emotional drama TV series "Contemporaries" reflects the changes in the era over the past sixty years since the founding of New China through the stories of several people who were born in the same year as the founding of the People's Republic of China.

Plot introduction:

"Contemporaries" is Xu Qing's first TV work after the movie "The Founding of a Republic", and also the TV drama with the largest age span she has ever played in, from an innocent and charming 16-year-old to her sixties, which is quite a test of acting skills. From the promotional clip, we can see that the "16-year-old" Xu Qing has short hair, pure and handsome; while the "nearing sixties" Xu Qing exudes an aristocratic aura, reminiscent of the "First Lady" in "The Founding of a Republic". In the drama, Ren Chengwei plays Xu Qing's childhood sweetheart lover, facing the same challenge of a 41-year age span. When he revealed the secret of looking young, he said: "Everyone has experienced being youthful and impetuous. When filming, I would re-examine my own 19-year-old self, and release that vitality and energy again."

"Contemporaries" is set against the backdrop of the development process of the People's Republic of China. The main characters Liu Jiefang, Tong Nannan, Li Huailin, and Lin Hong, although each experiencing different career, life, and family changes, are all closely linked to the fate of the country. They were born in the early days of the founding of the People's Republic of China, went to school in the 1950s and 60s, and graduated from high school in the later stages of the Cultural Revolution. Some joined the army, some went to factories, and more went to rural areas for resettlement. After they entered society, their experiences formed a huge contrast with their psychological expectations, leading some to fall into despair, some to become dispirited, some to reflect, and some to strive. The drama provides a comprehensive and multi-angle scan of China over the past sixty years, from the army to the countryside, from factories to schools, witnessing the glorious journey of the People's Republic of China over these 60 years. In addition, while focusing on the "contemporaries" of the People's Republic of China, the drama also devotes considerable space to portraying their children, the first generation of the "post-80s".
