The 2010 emotional drama series Peers reflects the changes in the era over the 60 years since the founding of New China through the stories of several people who are the same age as New China.
Synopsis:
Peers is Xu Qing's first television work after the movie Founding Ceremony, and also the TV series in which Xu Qing plays the largest age range, from a shy and lovely 16-year-old all the way to her sixties, testing her acting skills. In the promotional video, "16-year-old" Xu Qing has ear-length short hair, pure and handsome; "nearing her sixties" Xu Qing exudes an air of nobility, with a touch of the "First Lady" in Founding Ceremony. Ren Chengwei plays Xu Qing's childhood sweetheart in the series and also faces the challenge of portraying a 41-year age span. When he revealed the secret to looking younger, he said, "Everyone has experienced being young and full of vigor. When shooting, I re-examine my own 19-year-old self and release that vitality and energy again."
Peers uses the development process of the People's Republic as its backdrop. The main characters, Liu Jiefang, Tong Nannan, Li Huailin, and Lin Hong, although each experience different career, life, and family changes, are all closely related to the fate of the country. They were born in the early days of the founding of the nation, went to school in the 1950s and 60s, graduated from high school in the later stages of the Cultural Revolution, some joined the army, some went to factories, and more went to the countryside. After entering society, their experiences contrast greatly with their psychological expectations, leading some to fall into despair, others to become disheartened, some to reflect, and others to strive. The series conducts a comprehensive, multi-angle scan of China from the military to the countryside, from factories to schools over the past sixty years, witnessing the glorious journey that New China has undergone in these 60 years. Additionally, while focusing on the "peers" of the People's Republic, the series also devotes considerable space to portraying their children, namely the first generation of "post-80s" and their living conditions.
