Synopsis of Sword:
During the War of Resistance against Japan, senior Nationalist officer Wu Kefeng was deeply moved by our party's righteousness and joined the revolutionary camp, working undercover within the enemy ranks as a glorious "undercover general."
Wu Kefeng’s fellow officer Ji Shaokang had been in love with the maid Wang Hanmei in their hometown, and she bore him a son. Ji's father arranged for Wang Hanmei to be forcibly married to his junior townsman, Wu Kefeng. Wu's parents were open-minded and willing to show kindness and accept her, but Wu Kefeng felt that Wang Hanmei had an ambiguous relationship with Ji Shaokang and was politically unclear, leaving him in a difficult situation. Just as the country fell into enemy hands, Wu Kefeng painfully bid farewell to his hometown and resolutely embarked on the path of resistance, henceforth not involving himself in family matters.
On the eve of the fall of the besieged city, his mother-in-law passed away due to illness. Wang Hanmei sought her husband to inform him of the death and got lost in the chaos, losing her only child. Fortunately, she was rescued from danger by our New Fourth Army. Under the education of our Party, Wang Hanmei joined the revolutionary work and was dispatched into the enemy's Central Intelligence Bureau, becoming an outstanding Party agent.
After the victory in the War of Resistance against Japan, Chiang Kai-shek's forces launched an all-out offensive against the liberated areas. Our Party activated Wu Kefeng, code-named "Secret Messenger No. 1," ordering him to carry out counterintelligence missions to dismantle the enemy forces. Due to operational needs, Wang Hanmei, codenamed "Secret Messenger No. 2," also went to the army, specifically assisting Wu Kefeng. Ji Shaokang, who had become a Central Intelligence Bureau agent, was sent into the army to perform anti-espionage missions. These three compatriots with deep grudges gathered on the battlefield, each displaying their skills at a critical moment. Amidst complex emotional entanglements, they remained tense and engaged in a series of perilous behind-enemy-lines intelligence struggles.
Wu Kefeng cleverly stole the city defense map, secretly destroyed the city defense facilities, persuaded Commander Ma Huai'an... step by step successfully dismantling the enemy forces and persuading many progressive officers. However, under the relentless pressure from Ji Shaokang and the military intelligence special envoy Lin Shuangmu, he often found himself in dangerous situations, teetering on the brink of exposure. Due to the need for single-line contact, Wang Hanmei long remained unaware of Wu Kefeng's identity. Wu Kefeng knew well that he owed much to Wang Hanmei but could not apologize face-to-face. They worked seamlessly together in secret operations but were emotionally intertwined with grievances. When victory was finally in sight and the opportunity to pour out their hearts was near, it was already time for a heartbreaking farewell. Many comrades, including Wang Hanmei, sacrificed themselves tragically for the success of the mission. Wu Kefeng bade farewell to his comrades in arms and set off alone for Nanjing, preparing to face even more arduous trials.
