In 2010, CCTV-8’s prime-time spy-themed TV series "Sharp Sword", which is also known as "Undercover General", is based on a true historical figure. Set against the backdrop of the Huaihai Campaign, it showcases the conspiracy and struggle on the covert battlefront between the Kuomintang and the Communist Party.
Introduction to the plot of "Sharp Sword" ("Undercover General"):
After the victory in the War of Resistance Against Japan, the Chinese people looked forward to building a peaceful nation. However, Chiang Kai-shek tore up the “Peace Agreement” and issued an order to eliminate the bandits. The decisive battle for China's destiny began. In order to win the uprising of the Northwest Army of the Kuomintang, the Central Committee decided to activate "Special Emissary No. 1" Wu Kefeng and dispatch "Special Emissary No. 2" Wang Hanmei to assist with work in the Northwest Army. The Kuomintang Military Intelligence Bureau sent Director Ji Shaokang to the Northwest Army to investigate spies within the party. When Wu, Wang, and Ji met, it triggered memories of past events.
Ten years ago, by the Huai River, beautiful and pure peasant girl Wang Xiumei was forced by her parents to become a maid in the wealthy Ji family, specifically attending to Ji Shaokang who had just returned from studying in Japan. Over time, they fell deeply in love. After Wang Xiumei became pregnant, Ji Shaokang, under pressure from his large family, broke his promise to marry Wang Xiumei. She was driven out of the Ji family. Wang Xiumei, who was unmarried but pregnant, was considered a disgrace to her family and was hastily married to Wu Kefeng from Langzui Village. However, when Wu Kefeng learned that Wang Xiumei had a child out of wedlock and bore a rebellious son, he left home. At the Wu household, Wang Xiumei faithfully fulfilled her duties as a daughter-in-law and gave birth to a son. Thinking she could survive for a while, disaster struck as the Japanese artillery destroyed the entire Wu family and took away Wang Xiumei and Ji Shaokang's son. Wang Xiumei, who survived the catastrophe, and Wu Keling, Wu Kefeng's younger brother, subsequently joined the New Fourth Army, hoping to avenge their national humiliation and personal grievances.
Wu Kefeng, who had left home, entered the Baoding Military Academy and later joined Feng Yuxiang's forces. After graduation, he was dispatched with Jiang Jingguo to study at Sun Yat-sen University in Moscow and proudly joined the Chinese Communist Party. Upon returning to China, instead of working in the Soviet area, he secretly returned to Feng Yuxiang's Northwest Army under organizational orders. Meanwhile, Ji Shaokang graduated from military school, participated in the Military Intelligence training, became a Military Intelligence agent, and was later assigned to serve as the director of intelligence for the 68th Group Army.
After being injured, Wang Xiumei, who joined the New Fourth Army, was also secretly sent by the organization to study radio telegraphy at the Nationalist military academy and successfully infiltrated the headquarters of the 68th Group Army where Wu Kefeng was stationed, serving as a telegraph operator.
