Synopsis of Sword:
During the Anti-Japanese War period, Nationalist senior officer Wu Kefeng was moved by the righteousness of our party and joined the revolutionary camp, working undercover within the enemy ranks as an honorable "undercover general."
Wu Kefeng's fellow countryman officer Ji Shaokang had a romantic relationship with the maid Wang Hanmei in their hometown, resulting in her giving birth to a child. Ji's father arranged for Wang Hanmei to be forcibly married to his junior kinsman Wu Kefeng. Wu's parents were understanding and willing to accommodate her, but Wu Kefeng felt conflicted about Wang Hanmei's relationship with Ji Shaokang and her unclear political stance. Coinciding with the fall of the country, Wu Kefeng painfully bid farewell to his hometown and resolutely embarked on the path of resistance, no longer involving himself in family affairs.
On the eve of the city's fall, Wu Kefeng's mother-in-law passed away, and Hanmei sought out her husband to report the death, getting lost in the chaos and losing her only son. Fortunately, she was rescued from peril by our New Fourth Army. Under the education of our party, Wang Hanmei joined the revolutionary work and was sent into the enemy's Central Intelligence Bureau, becoming an outstanding special agent of our party.
After the victory of the Anti-Japanese War, Chiang Kai-shek's forces launched a full-scale attack on the liberated areas. Our party activated Wu Kefeng, code-named "Secret Agent No.1," ordering him to carry out subversion tasks to undermine the enemy's army. Due to the needs of the mission, Wang Hanmei, code-named "Secret Agent No.2," also went to the military to assist Wu Kefeng specifically. Ji Shaokang, who had become a Central Intelligence Bureau agent, was sent into the army to execute counter-espionage missions. The three compatriots with deep grudges gathered on the battlefield, each displaying their skills at a critical moment. Amidst complex emotional entanglements, they remained vigilant and engaged in dangerous espionage struggles behind enemy lines.
Wu Kefeng cleverly stole the city defense map, secretly destroyed the city defense facilities, persuaded Commander Ma Huai'an... gradually succeeding in undermining the enemy's army and converting many progressive officers. However, under the relentless pressure from Ji Shaokang and the Military Intelligence Bureau special envoy Lin Shuangmu, Wu Kefeng faced numerous dangers and was repeatedly on the brink of exposure. Due to the need for single-line communication, Wang Hanmei long remained unaware of Wu Kefeng's identity. Wu Kefeng deeply regretted his debts to Wang Hanmei but could not apologize face-to-face. They worked seamlessly together in secret operations but were emotionally intertwined with grievances. As victory approached and the opportunity to express their innermost feelings was near, it was already time for a painful parting. Many comrades, including Wang Hanmei, sacrificed themselves heroically to ensure the success of the mission. Wu Kefeng bade farewell to his comrades in arms and set off alone for Nanjing, preparing to face even more arduous tests.
