This historical costume mythological drama, "Tianshi Zhongkui: Blood-colored Mandarin Ducks," tells the story of how Yan Chixia once saved Nie Xiaoxian's soul by severely wounding the "thousand-year-old tree demon" Black Mountain Demon. After lying low for a hundred years, the Black Mountain Demon decides to take revenge. Zhou Fusheng is a young man who is upright and kind-hearted, making a living as a sculptor with exceptional skills. He forms a bond with Lin Xiaodie, the daughter of a wealthy family, through mandarin duck puppets. Lin Xiaodie is deeply impressed by Zhou Fusheng's unyielding and dignified demeanor despite his poverty, and despite their vast social differences, the two fall genuinely and passionately in love. However, due to Lin's father's desire to align with power, Zhou Fusheng suffers great persecution but remains steadfast and unrepentant, willing to sacrifice his life for love. Liu Hansmoke and Wang Fuqu come to earth to find Zhong Kui, who has been demoted to a mortal, and they meet Zhou Fusheng. They are moved by his devotion and try every means to help him reunite with Lin Xiaodie.
The Black Mountain Demon seeks to increase his powers by consuming the souls of couples during their intimate moments. He forces his female demon servant Qiuyan to use Nie Xiaoxian's portrait to lure men, but Zhou Fusheng remains unmoved. His noble character touches Qiuyan, and even though she is an otherworldly being, she develops feelings for such a man. However, Zhou Fusheng has only Lin Xiaodie in his heart and resolutely rejects her advances. Heartbroken, Qiuyan becomes filled with hatred out of love and falsely accuses Zhou Fusheng of being the reincarnation of Yan Chixia to the Black Mountain Demon. The Black Mountain Demon uses sorcery to confuse Lin Xiaodie's mind, making her believe she is Nie Xiaoxian, and lures Zhou Fusheng into his trap. Liu Hansmoke and Wang Fuqu arrive just in time to battle the Black Mountain Demon. In the fierce battle, Zhou Fusheng awakens his past memories, revealing his true form as Zhong Kui. The Black Mountain Demon is greatly shocked and puts up a desperate fight. Guanyin appears to lend Zhong Kui a helping hand, and the Black Mountain Demon ultimately meets his end at the hands of the "Demon-slaying Sword."
Guanyin congratulates Zhong Kui on reclaiming his position as the "Great Exorcist God," but Zhong Kui is sorrowful because he has already promised that if he can save Lin Xiaodie, he will willingly sacrifice his own love. A heartbroken Lin Xiaodie can only watch helplessly as Zhong Kui departs, telling her to live well. Surrounded by auspicious clouds, Zhong Kui ascends to the heavens, carrying with him endless longing for the human world and for Lin Xiaodie.
