Plot summary:
Shan Shu was originally a thousand-year-old mountain monster from Zhongnan Mountain, residing in South Mountain Town. Any single young man passing by would fall victim to her seduction. Shan Shu's methods were cruel, and every time there was a murder case, an innocent woman would become the scapegoat. The county official of South Mountain Town, Wang Jing, was known for his "divine judgment," which led to his smooth career advancement.
Guan Yin felt that South Mountain Town was filled with evil energy and ordered Zhong Kui to go and eliminate the demon. Zhong Kui returned to Zhongnan Mountain and learned that his childhood friend Du Ping had risked his life to establish a monument for him, almost facing punishment from the court, making Zhong Kui deeply grateful for Du Ping's friendship. Zhong Kui's sister, Zhong Li, was very different from her brother; she was naturally beautiful and considered the first beauty of South Mountain Town, naturally becoming the desired object of high-ranking officials. Wang Jing was determined to win Zhong Li's hand. However, Zhong Li had always liked Du Ping, who was a friend of her brother. Feeling that their social statuses didn't match, she kept her love hidden in her heart. After her brother's wrongful death, Du Ping's loyalty to her brother moved her, and she decided to marry Du Ping regardless of everything. Zhong Kui knew that Du Ping also admired Zhong Li and intended to help them get married as a way to repay the favor.
After several rounds of investigation, Zhong Kui uncovered the truth and captured Shan Shu. However, to save a civilian girl, he did not completely destroy Shan Shu, allowing her to escape. Bearing a grudge against Zhong Kui, Shan Shu decided to take revenge. Meanwhile, Wang Jing was afraid that Zhong Kui's investigation would ruin his reputation, so he conspired with the venomous mountain demon, working together to oppose Zhong Kui. Du Ping and Zhong Li's originally beautiful love story turned into a thrilling tragedy due to Shan Shu's relentless revenge and Wang Jing's aggressive pursuit of Zhong Li.
Guan Yin mistakenly thought that Zhong Kui had "shown favoritism and perverted justice" and wrongfully blamed Zhong Kui. In the end, Zhong Kui redeemed himself by eliminating Shan Shu and bringing Wang Jing, who disregarded human lives, to justice. Through his actions, he proved himself and sent his sister Zhong Li to Du's family, where she happily married Du Ping.
