Plot summary of Episode 13 of the TV series "The Star of Eternal Life":

During the Guangxu period of the Qing Dynasty, Chun'er, a poor country boy, earns his living by collecting manure to support his seriously ill mother and adopted sister Ling'er. Liang Wenchou, the second son of the richest landlord in Liang's village, is Chun'er's half-brother. After learning the truth, they recognize their mother together, and the bond between Chun'er, Ling'er, and Wenchou grows stronger. In order to raise money for his mother's medical treatment, Chun'er castrates himself under the false belief that he will be rewarded by the authorities, leaving Wenchou deeply moved. Before her death, their mother instructs Wenchou to study hard and become an extraordinary person. From a young age, Wenchou had a compassionate heart, great aspirations, and concern for the political situation. Now with his mother's last wish, he hopes to achieve something significant in the future to bring hope and happiness to all impoverished people, especially those like his unfortunate mother and brother Chun'er.

In the spring, Wenchou takes Chun'er to Beijing to take part in the imperial examination. While wandering around the capital, Chun'er is greatly astonished by its prosperity and grandeur. Not far away, a large and dignified procession appears, with the palace chief eunuch Li Lianying sitting in a bright yellow sedan chair. For the first time, Chun'er sees such wealth and glory, and believes becoming a eunuch is a way to realize his dreams.

Examiner Yang Xizhen reads Wenchou's essay and believes he is exactly the kind of talent the country needs. Wenchou meets Shungui and Wangyi at the exam hall; the three share similar ideals and become friends. Wenchou finally lives up to Yang Xizhen's expectations by ranking first in the palace examination. Yang Xizhen opposes Empress Dowager Cixi's rule behind the curtain and shares his views with his promising students, Wenchou, Shungui, and Wangyi. Both Wenchou and Shungui harbor patriotic ideals and naturally align with their teacher Yang Xizhen.

Chun'er tells Wenchou that after entering the palace, he must rise to prominence to help Wenchou realize his ideals and repay his initial kindness. However, eunuchs are not allowed to associate with external officials, so the relationship between Chun'er and Wenchou must remain secret.

Madame Zhang, the owner of a bar in the embassy district, is a mysterious figure. Well-informed and influential, she is elegant and unrestrained at times. Various rumors surround her background, but she always smiles without answering. Reporters from various countries like to write and chat here, discussing current events. Madame Zhang listens attentively but never divulges any information. Through Madame Zhang, Wenchou meets Japanese reporter Gang Gui and German reporter Tom. Gang Gui is serious, while Tom is lively and talkative. Both speak fluent Chinese. They are amazed by Wenchou's youth, handsomeness, and down-to-earth demeanor, and they get along very well. Through exchanges with them, Wenchou learns about the world and also understands how China is perceived by the world. This gives Wenchou a great shock.

Yang Xizhen's daughter Qingyun excels in poetry, music, and other arts, and her talents are widely known. Both Wenchou and Shungui admire her upon their first meeting, especially Shungui. Wenchou notices Shungui's feelings and hides his own affection for Qingyun, hoping his friend can achieve his wish. Because Wenchou has lacked familial love since childhood, he values friendship highly and would give up anything for his friends. Qingyun and Wenchou have pleasant conversations, while Shungui feels that Qingyun likes Wenchou, leaving him slightly disheartened.

After entering the palace, Chun'er quickly gains the favor of Empress Dowager Cixi due to his handsome appearance, cleverness, and proficiency in various skills such as acting and cooking. Chun'er serves closely by Cixi's side and is highly valued.

Wenchou thanks Madame Zhang for opening the door to understanding the world for him. However, their misunderstandings make both of them realize the emotions in their hearts, but given their different identities, positions, and ages, they cannot be compatible, so they can only keep their feelings deep inside and savor them quietly. Through observation, Madame Zhang finds that both Ling'er and Qingyun have feelings for Wenchou, but Wenchou shows no interest in them. With a woman's intuition, she realizes her special place in Wenchou's heart, so she always smiles. Shungui discovers Wenchou's affection for Madame Zhang and frowns in annoyance. Actually, Wenchou knows that Madame Zhang's background is mysterious, and as a widow, marrying her would inevitably lead to negative comments and affect his future prospects, possibly preventing him from fulfilling his mother's last wish. This troubles Wenchou greatly. Shungui persuades Madame Zhang to cut off her feelings for Wenchou. Finally, Wenchou decides to marry Qingyun.

Initially, Qingyun thought Ling'er was Wenchou's concubine and refused to agree to the marriage. Ling'er personally explained the situation to Qingyun, resolving the misunderstanding between Wenchou and Qingyun, leading to mutual devotion. During Wenchou's wedding, Ling'er forces herself to smile and handle everything. Qingyun can see the subtle feelings between Wenchou and Ling'er, but instead of being jealous, she treats Ling'er very kindly. Gradually, Ling'er accepts Qingyun in her heart and silently blesses Wenchou and Qingyun for their happiness.

Chun'er's influence on Cixi gradually increases, even Ronglu treats Chun'er politely. Li Lianying pretends to trust Chun'er, inciting Cixi to let Chun'er spy on the situation related to Concubine Zhen within the palace and gather information about gatherings of the emperor's faction outside.

Wenchou tells Chun'er to follow Cixi's orders and gain her trust, hoping to obtain crucial information at a critical moment in the future.

With the new policies implemented by Emperor Guangxu, Cixi receives reports from Ronglu and becomes furious. Ronglu and others poison Yang Xizhen and fabricate a story that he intended to bewitch Emperor Guangxu. Cixi is half-convinced. Wenchou and others decide to keep Yang Xizhen's death a secret and announce that he has left the capital and returned home. Qingyun learns that Wenchou does not plan to investigate or seek revenge, and she becomes extremely angry and depressed, falling critically ill.

Tom and Gang Gui inform Wenchou that Ronglu visited Yuan Shikai, and Wenchou realizes it is over.

When Madame Zhang learns that Cixi intends to kill Wenchou, she advises him to flee. Wenchou refuses to leave because Qingyun is gravely ill, and he cannot abandon her. Qingyun truly understands Wenchou's decision and passes away that night. When Chun'er learns of Wenchou's perilous situation, memories of all the kindness flood back, and he resolves to sacrifice his life to repay Wenchou. Wenchou and Ling'er retreat to their hometown together.
