Synopsis:
The Battle of Jinzhou is underway, and the commander of the spearhead battalion, Hao Bao, leads his soldiers in a fierce battle on the hilltop against enemy forces. When the battle is finally won, his fiancée Lan Zhen lies dead in a pool of blood, leaving behind their young son Lian Wa Zi. With no means to care for his son amidst the war, Hao Bao entrusts Lian Wa Zi to a local family. Soon after the liberation of New China, Hao Bao receives orders to be dispatched to the northernmost part of the country, known as "Beidahuang," where he begins a life of military reclamation. The troops continue to follow military organization and discipline.
Laying down their rifles and picking up hoes to cultivate land proves difficult for the soldiers to adjust to. These men, who have experienced the perils of war, now yearn for a home. Despite the lack of houses or people in the wilderness, they long for women, knowing that having women would mean having a home. Some even say that having a child around, crying and making noise, would be better than nothing, so they encourage Hao Bao to bring back Lian Wa Zi. At this moment, the clerk Shan Yao returns from headquarters with great news: women will soon arrive in Beidahuang, which brings joy to everyone as they await the arrival of these young ladies.
Meanwhile, city girl Shen Xiu learns about the recruitment drive in Beidahuang from newspapers circulated among her classmates. She eagerly shares this news with her high school classmate Luo Weiwei, who is troubled by her marriage. The recruitment offers her a glimmer of hope, and together they secretly sign up without informing their families.
Hao Bao is currently grappling with the harsh realities of the reclamation area. Without proper housing, they cut reeds to build makeshift shelters; water shortages are managed carefully; lacking animals and tools, they use their shoulders and hands to get the work done. Breaking ground on barren wastelands to grow crops is no easy feat. Under Hao Bao's leadership, the spearhead battalion marches forward in the spring snowmelt, beginning their arduous journey of reclaiming the land.
Due to a lack of understanding of agricultural production principles, conflicts arise between the stubborn Hao Bao and his deputy battalion commander, Geng Xi Wang. Through competition, Hao Bao eventually recognizes his mistakes, apologizes to Geng Xi Wang, humbly learns agricultural knowledge, and achieves breakthrough success in production.
As basic sustenance issues are temporarily resolved, marriage becomes a fundamental issue for stabilizing morale. Colonel Qiu Da Li of a certain vanguard regiment in the reclamation area rushes to the headquarters in Jiamusi to report the actual situation to the general. The organization places great importance on this issue and accelerates recruitment efforts in the cities. Shen Xiu and her cousin Luo Weiwei defy their families' opposition and set foot on the land of Beidahuang. Several soldiers are specially assigned from the battalion to ensure the safe journey northward for these young women. Along the way, the clerk Shan Yao pays special attention to Shen Xiu. This handsome young man recites Tang poetry and uses a slingshot to shoot birds, bringing much joy to Shen Xiu. As they travel further north, the desolation becomes more apparent, revealing the cruel truth day by day. The group encounters bandits, but Shan Yao's intelligence and bravery save Shen Xiu and the other female soldiers, deepening their relationship.
Finally, the group arrives at their destination, Fumian, where the regiment organizes a training team. Upon hearing that the women will be distributed to various battalions after training, the soldiers of the Longshan Spearhead Battalion make an effort to tidy up their earthen dwellings. In Fumian, Hao Bao immediately notices the smart and pretty Shen Xiu, finding her resemblance to his deceased fiancée Lan Zhen deeply rooted in his heart.
The female soldiers finally arrive in Beidahuang. Initially shocked by its desolation, the women are rudely scolded by the rough Hao Bao, frightening Shen Xiu. Fortunately, she spots Shan Yao standing among the ranks, calming her nerves somewhat. The frightened women burst into loud cries, shaking the earth houses almost to collapse, leaving the men at a loss, none daring to enter. After crying themselves tired, the women must face reality, but Hao Bao's rudeness and machismo instill fear in Shen Xiu.
Soon, another batch of women from Shandong arrives at Longshan. Shen Xiu and others go to greet them. Initially reluctant to disembark, the sight of many green onions and pancakes placed before them changes their minds. Among them is Tian Erman, tall and robust with a loud voice. Unashamed, she says, "There's no way around it; us Shandong people love green onions dipped in soy sauce with pancakes!" The girls nickname her "Shandong Green Onion." The Shandong women are strong and work quickly, often receiving praise. The city girls, led by Shen Xiu, work overtime at night in the fields to catch up. Learning of this, Hao Bao severely criticizes Shen Xiu, increasing her resentment towards him.
Hao Bao's roughness attracts the admiration of Tian Erman and Luo Weiwei, yet he remains deeply in love with Shen Xiu. When Shen Xiu's mother dies of illness, the usually stern Hao Bao softens, trying every way possible to comfort her, though nothing can alleviate her immense sorrow. During Shen Xiu's most melancholy days, Shan Yao quietly brings her joy, drawing her closer to him.
To resolve the personal issues of the soldiers, the organization increasingly frequently arranges matches between these women and men. Through introductions, Tian Erman marries political instructor Zhao Tian Shun; Luo Weiwei fails in pursuing Hao Bao but finds love with deputy battalion commander Geng Xi Wang; Shen Xiu grows closer to Shan Yao, while only the devoted Hao Bao remains alone. Soon, personnel adjustments occur within the battalion, and Shan Yao is transferred to the border livestock unit. Alone, Shen Xiu learns to drive a tractor, becoming one of the first female tractor drivers in Beidahuang. Frequent interactions gradually reduce Shen Xiu's guard toward Hao Bao, improving their relationship. Though able to interact naturally without distance, Shen Xiu's deepest affection remains for Shan Yao.
Many female soldiers have settled down in Beidahuang, raising families and children, while only Hao Bao and Shen Xiu remain unmarried. At this time, Shan Yao sacrifices himself saving civilians, leaving Shen Xiu heartbroken and bedridden. Hao Bao tirelessly cares for her. After recovering, Shen Xiu undergoes a transformation. As her grief subsides, she begins to reassess the Hao Bao before her. With deeper understanding, admiration for Hao Bao slowly grows within Shen Xiu's heart. By this time, the farm has developed significantly. When Shen Xiu finally accepts her feelings for Hao Bao, years of military service have taken their toll on his health, and he falls ill.
