Plot Introduction:

The Jinzhou Campaign, Commander of the Spearhead Battalion Hao Bao is leading his soldiers to attack the mountain top and engage in hand-to-hand combat with the enemy. When the battle is won, his fiancée Lan Zhen has already fallen in a pool of blood, leaving behind her young son Lian Wazi. During the war, Hao Bao was unable to take care of his son and had to leave Lian Wazi with a fellow villager to be raised. Not long after the liberation of New China, Hao Bao received orders to be dispatched to the northernmost part of the country, known as "Beidahuang," where he began his military reclamation career. They continued to follow the military organization and maintained the style of soldiers.

Putting down their rifles and picking up hoes to cultivate and farm the land, the soldiers initially struggled to adapt. These men who had experienced the rain of bullets and artillery, once they stopped fighting, wanted a family. Despite there being no houses or people on the wasteland, they yearned for women; having women would mean having a home. Some said that even if there were no women, having a child crying around would also be good. They even urged Hao Bao to bring back Lian Wazi. At this moment, the clerk Xiaoshanyao went to the regiment headquarters to fetch letters and returned with an incredible piece of news: soon, there would be women coming to Beidahuang, which greatly delighted everyone as they eagerly awaited the arrival of the young women.

On the other hand, city girl Shen Xiu learned about the recruitment notice for workers in the Beidahuang reclamation area from newspapers passed around by her classmates. She quickly shared this information with her high school classmate Luo Weiwei. Luo Weiwei was troubled by her marriage situation, and the recruitment notice gave her a glimmer of hope. The two secretly signed up without telling their families.

At this time, Hao Bao was deeply troubled by the harsh realities facing the reclamation zone. The reclamation soldiers had no place to live, so they cut reeds to build shelters and dug ground nests; water sources were scarce, so they used water sparingly; lacking livestock and tools for reclamation, they used their shoulders and fingers to make up for it. However, cultivating grain on the barren Gobi Desert was not an easy task. Under Hao Bao's leadership, the Spearhead Battalion bravely started reclaiming the land just as the spring snow had melted.

Due to a lack of understanding of agricultural production laws, the stubborn Hao Bao had many conflicts with Deputy Battalion Commander Geng Xiwen. Through repeated competitions, Hao Bao eventually recognized his own mistakes, apologized to Geng Xiwen, and humbly studied agricultural knowledge, achieving breakthroughs in production.

When the issue of food and clothing was temporarily resolved, the problem of marriage became fundamental to stabilizing morale. A certain Pioneer Regiment Commander Qiu Dali from the reclamation area rushed overnight to the headquarters set up in Jiamusi, reporting the actual situation to the general. The organization placed great importance on this issue and expedited the recruitment process in the cities. Shen Xiu and her cousin Luo Weiwei disregarded their families' opposition and set foot on the land of Beidahuang. Several soldiers specially sent from the battalion ensured the safe journey of these girls northward. Along the way, the battalion clerk Xiaoshanyao especially took care of Shen Xiu. This handsome young man could recite Tang poems and shoot birds with a slingshot, bringing much joy to Shen Xiu. As they traveled further north, the desolation became more evident, and the cruel truth gradually unfolded. The group encountered bandits, but Xiaoshanyao saved the female soldiers with his intelligence and bravery, deepening the relationship between the two.

Finally, the group arrived at their destination, Fumian, where the battalion organized a training team. When the soldiers of the Longshan Spearhead Battalion heard that the women who completed the training would be assigned to various companies, everyone made efforts to tidy up their ground nests. In Fumian, Hao Bao immediately noticed the smart and beautiful Shen Xiu, finding her resemblance to his deceased fiancée Lan Zhen, thus planting deep roots in his heart for Shen Xiu.

The female soldiers finally arrived in Beidahuang. Initially shocked by its desolation, Hao Bao rudely scolded the girls, frightening Shen Xiu. Fortunately, she spotted Xiaoshanyao standing in the line, calming her somewhat. The frightened female soldiers were all startled into silence, followed by an explosive cry loud enough to shake the house, leaving the men at a loss, none daring to enter. After crying themselves out, the female soldiers still had to accept reality, but Hao Bao’s rudeness and machismo made Shen Xiu very fearful.

Soon, another batch of Shandong women arrived at Longshan. Shen Xiu and the others went to greet them. Initially, the new arrivals refused to get off the vehicle, but when offered many green onions and pancakes placed in front of the car, they all got off one by one. Tian Erman was among them, tall and strong with a loud voice, unreservedly stating that there was no way around it—Shandong people loved dipping green onions in sauce with pancakes! From then on, the girls called her “Shandong Green Onion.” The Shandong women were strong, worked quickly, and often received praise. The urban girls, led by Shen Xiu, worked overtime at night to catch up with seedling thinning. Upon learning this, Hao Bao severely criticized Shen Xiu, making her hate him even more.

Hao Bao's rudeness instead attracted Tian Erman and Luo Weiwei, but he remained deeply affectionate towards Shen Xiu. At this time, Shen Xiu's mother passed away due to illness, and the usually stern Hao Bao changed completely, trying every means to console her. No matter what he did, he couldn't comfort her immense sorrow. During Shen Xiu's most disheartened days, Xiaoshanyao silently delivered happiness bit by bit to her, drawing her closer to him.

To solve the personal issues of the soldiers, the organization increasingly frequently arranged matches between these women and the men. Through introductions, Tian Erman married Political Instructor Zhao Tianshun; Luo Weiwei, unsuccessful in pursuing Hao Bao, developed love for Deputy Battalion Commander Geng Xiwen; while Shen Xiu grew closer to Xiaoshanyao. Only the devoted Hao Bao remained alone. Soon, personnel adjustments occurred in the battalion, and Xiaoshanyao was transferred to the border pastoral platoon. Alone, Shen Xiu learned how to operate a tractor, becoming the first generation of female tractor drivers in Beidahuang. With frequent interactions, Shen Xiu gradually eliminated her guard against Hao Bao, improving their relationship and allowing them to face each other naturally without distance. Yet, Shen Xiu still loved Xiaoshanyao most.

Many female soldiers had settled down and had children in Beidahuang, but only Hao Bao and Shen Xiu remained single. At this time, Xiaoshanyao sacrificed himself to save civilians, causing Shen Xiu immense grief, rendering her bedridden thereafter. Hao Bao tirelessly cared for her day and night. After recovering, Shen Xiu seemed transformed. As her sorrow subsided, she began to reassess the Hao Bao before her. With deeper understanding, admiration for Hao Bao slowly grew within Shen Xiu's heart. By this time, the farm had improved significantly. When Shen Xiu finally acknowledged her feelings for Hao Bao, years of military service had worn him down, and he fell ill. Knowing his condition was severe, he didn’t want to burden Shen Xiu and gradually distanced himself from her. At this moment, Yuan Feng, wife of Qiu Dali, brought Hao Bao good news: General Wang Zhen had arranged for him to be treated in Beijing. The jeep carrying Hao Bao sped through the snowy wind. At this moment, Shen Xiu, dressed in red wedding attire, stood in the middle of the road, and the car came to an abrupt stop...
