Synopsis:

The Jinzhou Campaign, Company Commander Hao Bao is leading his soldiers in a fierce battle on the hilltop against the enemy. When the battle is won, his fiancée Lan Zhen has fallen in a pool of blood, leaving behind her young son Lian Wazi. During the war, Hao Bao cannot take care of his son, so he entrusts Lian Wazi to be raised by a fellow villager. Soon after the founding of New China, Hao Bao receives an order to be dispatched to the northernmost part of the country, known as “Beidahuang,” where he begins his military reclamation life. They still follow the military's organizational structure and continue their soldier-like discipline.

Putting down their rifles and picking up hoes to cultivate land proves difficult for the soldiers to adapt to at first. These men who have experienced gunfights now yearn for a home. Despite the lack of houses and people in the wilderness, they desire women, believing that with women comes a home. Some even say having a child around crying and making noise would be better than nothing, so they even urge Hao Bao to bring back Lian Wazi. At this moment, the clerk Xiaoshanyao goes to the regiment headquarters to retrieve mail and brings back a tremendous piece of good news: women will soon come to Beidahuang, which greatly delights everyone as they eagerly await the arrival of the young ladies.

On the other hand, city girl Shen Xiu learns about the recruitment notice for the Beidahuang reclamation area from newspapers circulated among her classmates. She promptly shares this information with her high school classmate Luo Weiwei. Luo Weiwei is troubled by her marriage, and the recruitment notice offers her a glimmer of hope. The two girls secretly sign up without telling their families.

At this time, Hao Bao is deeply troubled by the harsh realities of the reclamation area. Without proper housing, the reclamation soldiers cut reeds to build sheds and dig earthen pits; water sources are scarce, so they conserve what little they have; lacking animals and tools for farming, they use their shoulders and hands to compensate. However, cultivating grain on barren wastelands is not an easy task. Leading the spearhead company, Hao Bao takes the first steps in reclaiming the land just as the spring snowmelt finishes, using the same shoulders that once carried rifles.

Due to a lack of understanding of agricultural production patterns, the stubborn Hao Bao finds himself in conflict with his deputy commander, Geng Xiwen. Through various competitions, Hao Bao eventually recognizes his mistakes, apologizes to Geng Xiwen, and humbly studies agricultural knowledge, achieving groundbreaking progress in production.

When the basic needs for food and clothing are temporarily met, the issue of marriage becomes fundamental to stabilizing morale. A certain vanguard regiment commander, Qiu Dalü, rushes overnight to the headquarters set up in Jiamusi and reports the actual situation to the general. The organization places great importance on this matter and accelerates the recruitment process in the cities. Shen Xiu and her cousin Luo Weiwei disregard opposition from their families and set foot on the soil of Beidahuang. The superiors specially assign several soldiers from the battalion to ensure the safe journey northward for these young women. Along the way, the battalion's clerk Xiaoshanyao particularly cares for Shen Xiu. This handsome young man can recite Tang poetry and uses a slingshot to shoot flying birds, bringing much joy to Shen Xiu. As they travel further north, the desolation becomes more apparent, revealing the cruel reality day by day. The group encounters bandits, but Xiaoshanyao saves the female soldiers Shen Xiu and others with his wit and bravery, deepening their relationship.

Finally, the group arrives at their destination, Fumian, where the regiment organizes a training team. Upon hearing that the women will be assigned to various companies after the training, the soldiers of Longshan's spearhead company make efforts to tidy up their earthen pits. In Fumian, Hao Bao immediately notices the intelligent and beautiful Shen Xiu, finding her resemblance to his deceased fiancée Lan Zhen, thus deeply embedding Shen Xiu in his heart.

The female soldiers finally arrive in Beidahuang. The initial sight of its desolation shocks the newly arrived girls. Hao Bao rudely scolds the young women, frightening Shen Xiu, who calms down only upon seeing Xiaoshanyao standing in the crowd. The female soldiers, scared and silenced by the scolding, burst into deafening cries, almost shaking the house. The male soldiers are at a loss, none daring to enter. Once exhausted from crying, the women must accept the reality, but Hao Bao's rudeness and machismo make Shen Xiu very fearful.

Soon, another batch of women from Shandong arrives at Longshan. Shen Xiu and the others go to greet them. Initially, the new arrivals refuse to get out of the vehicle, but when many green onions and pancakes are placed in front of the car, they all disembark one by one. Tian Erman is among them. Tall, strong, and loud-voiced, she openly says, "There's no help for it; Shandong people love dipping green onions in sauce with pancakes!" The girls henceforth call her "Shandong Green Onion." The Shandong Green Onions work hard, finish tasks quickly, and receive constant praise. The city girls feel competitive and Shen Xiu leads them to work overtime weeding fields at night. When Hao Bao learns of this, he severely criticizes Shen Xiu, increasing her resentment towards him.

Hao Bao's rudeness attracts the admiration of Tian Erman and Luo Weiwei, but he remains deeply in love with Shen Xiu. At this time, Shen Xiu's mother passes away due to illness, and the usually stern Hao Bao changes his demeanor, trying every means to comfort her, yet nothing can console her immense sorrow. During Shen Xiu's most melancholy days, Xiaoshanyao quietly conveys happiness to her, bringing them closer.

To resolve the personal issues of the soldiers, the organization increasingly frequently arranges match-making between these women and men. After introductions, Tian Erman marries political instructor Zhao Tianchun; Luo Weiwei fails in pursuing Hao Bao but falls in love with Deputy Commander Geng Xiwen; Shen Xiu grows closer to Xiaoshanyao, while the devoted Hao Bao remains single. Soon, personnel adjustments occur within the battalion, and Xiaoshanyao is transferred to the border livestock detachment. Alone, Shen Xiu learns to operate a tractor, becoming the first generation of female tractor drivers in Beidahuang. With frequent interactions, Shen Xiu gradually lowers her guard against Hao Bao, improving their relationship until they can face each other candidly without distance, though Shen Xiu still loves Xiaoshanyao the most.

Many female soldiers have settled down in Beidahuang, started families, and had children, but Hao Bao and Shen Xiu remain unmarried. At this point, Xiaoshanyao sacrifices himself saving civilians, causing Shen Xiu immense grief, leading to prolonged illness. Hao Bao tirelessly cares for her. After recovering, Shen Xiu undergoes a transformation. As her sorrow eases, she begins to reassess the Hao Bao before her. As their understanding deepens, admiration for Hao Bao slowly grows in Shen Xiu’s heart. By this time, the farm has developed significantly. When Shen Xiu finally acknowledges her feelings for Hao Bao, years of military service have taken a toll on him, and he falls ill. Knowing his condition is severe, he does not wish to burden Shen Xiu and gradually distances himself from her. At this moment, Yuan Feng, the wife of Qiu Dali, brings Hao Bao good news: General Wang Zhen has arranged a hospital for him in Beijing for treatment. As the jeep carrying Hao Bao speeds through the snowstorm, Shen Xiu, dressed in a red wedding dress, stands in the middle of the road, bringing the car to an abrupt stop...
