Synopsis of Episode 4 of Sentimental Beidahuang:

In 2009, CCTV-1 aired a large-scale military-themed TV series called "Sentimental Beidahuang".

Synopsis:

The Battle of Jinzhou, Commander Hao Bao is leading his soldiers to fight hand-to-hand on the hilltop. When the battle is won, his fiancée Lan Zhen lies in a pool of blood, leaving behind her young son Lian Wa Zi. During the war, Hao Bao could not take care of his son and had to entrust Lian Wa Zi to be raised by a villager. Not long after the founding of New China, Hao Bao received orders to be dispatched to the northernmost part of the country, known as "Beidahuang", to begin a life of military farming. They still followed the military structure and maintained a soldier's demeanor.

Putting down their rifles and picking up hoes to plow and plant was difficult for the soldiers to adapt to. These men who had experienced gunfire now wanted a family. Despite the lack of houses and people in the wilderness, they wanted women; having women would mean having a home. Some even said that having a child crying around would be better than nothing, so they urged Hao Bao to bring Lian Wa Zi back. At this time, the clerk Xiao Shan Yao went to the regiment headquarters to fetch mail and brought back great news: women would soon come to Beidahuang, which made everyone very happy as they awaited the arrival of the girls.

On the other hand, city girl Shen Xiu learned about the recruitment notice for Beidahuang from newspapers passed around by her classmates and eagerly told her high school classmate Luo Weiwei. Luo Weiwei was troubled by her marriage and saw this recruitment as a glimmer of hope, so both of them secretly signed up without telling their families.

At this time, Hao Bao was troubled by the harsh realities of the Beidahuang reclamation area. The reclamation soldiers lacked housing, so they cut reeds to build shelters and dug holes in the ground; water sources were scarce, so they used water sparingly; there was a shortage of livestock and tools, so they used their shoulders and fingers instead. But it wasn't easy to grow grain on barren wastelands. Under Hao Bao's leadership, the vanguard unit managed to start reclaiming the land with their shoulders that once carried rifles as the spring snow melted.

Due to his lack of understanding of agricultural production patterns, stubborn Hao Bao had many conflicts with Deputy Commander Geng Xi Wang. In repeated competitions, Hao Bao eventually realized his mistakes, apologized to Geng Xi Wang, and humbly studied agricultural knowledge, achieving breakthroughs in production.

After the basic issues of food and shelter were temporarily resolved, the issue of marriage became fundamental to stabilizing morale. A certain Pioneer Regiment commander Qiu Da Li hurried to the headquarters located in Jiamusi overnight to report the actual situation to the general. The organization took this matter very seriously and expedited the recruitment process in the cities. Shen Xiu and her cousin Luo Weiwei ignored their family’s opposition and set foot on the land of Beidahuang. Several soldiers specially assigned from the battalion protected the safety of these girls traveling north. Along the way, the clerk Xiao Shan Yao paid special attention to Shen Xiu. This handsome young man could recite Tang poetry and use a slingshot to shoot flying birds, bringing Shen Xiu much joy. As they traveled further north, the desolation grew more apparent, and the cruel reality gradually revealed itself. The group encountered bandits, but Xiao Shan Yao saved Shen Xiu and the other female soldiers with his intelligence and bravery, deepening their relationship.

Finally, the group arrived at their destination, Fumian, where the regiment organized a training team. When the soldiers of the Longshan Vanguard Unit heard that the women who completed the training would be distributed to various units, they all voluntarily tidied up their makeshift homes. In Fumian, Hao Bao immediately noticed the smart and beautiful Shen Xiu, finding her resemblance to his deceased fiancée Lan Zhen deeply rooted in his heart.

The female soldiers finally arrived at Beidahuang. The desolation initially frightened the new arrivals, and Hao Bao rudely scolded the girls, frightening Shen Xiu. Fortunately, she spotted Xiao Shan Yao among the ranks, calming her somewhat. The scolding left the female soldiers in shock, breaking into thunderous cries almost collapsing the earthen houses, leaving the men at a loss, none daring to enter. After the exhausted female soldiers accepted reality, Hao Bao's rudeness and machismo made Shen Xiu very fearful.

Soon, another batch of Shandong women arrived at Longshan. Shen Xiu and others went to greet them. Initially, they refused to get off the vehicle, but when many green onions and pancakes were placed in front of the car, they all got off one by one. Tian Erman was among them, tall and robust with a loud voice and no reservations. She said, "There's no help for it, us Shandong people just love green onions with soy sauce and pancakes!" From then on, the girls nicknamed her "Shandong Green Onion." The "Shandong Green Onions" were strong and worked quickly, often receiving praise. The city girls felt不服气 (unwilling to accept defeat) and led by Shen Xiu, worked overtime at night weeding the fields. When Hao Bao found out, he severely criticized Shen Xiu, making her hate him even more.

Hao Bao's rudeness earned him the admiration of Tian Erman and Luo Weiwei, but he remained deeply infatuated with Shen Xiu. At this time, Shen Xiu's mother passed away due to illness, and the usually stern Hao Bao changed completely, trying every means to comfort her. However, no matter what he did, he couldn't console her immense grief. During Shen Xiu's most disheartened days, Xiao Shan Yao quietly delivered happiness to her, and she grew closer to him.

To solve the personal problems of the soldiers, the organization increasingly frequently arranged matchmaking between these women and the men. Through introductions, Tian Erman married Political Instructor Zhao Tian Shun; Luo Weiwei failed in her pursuit of Hao Bao and fell in love with Deputy Commander Geng Xi Wang; while Shen Xiu grew closer to Xiao Shan Yao, leaving only the devoted Hao Bao alone. Soon, personnel adjustments within the company resulted in Xiao Shan Yao being transferred to the border animal husbandry detachment. The lonely Shen Xiu learned to drive a tractor, becoming the first generation of female tractor drivers in Beidahuang. Through frequent interactions, Shen Xiu gradually eliminated her guard against Hao Bao, improving their relationship and allowing them to face each other calmly without distance. However, Shen Xiu still loved Xiao Shan Yao most.

Many of the female soldiers had already settled down in Beidahuang, started families, and had children, but only Hao Bao and Shen Xiu remained unmarried. At this time, Xiao Shan Yao sacrificed himself saving civilians, causing Shen Xiu immense sorrow, and she fell ill as a result. Hao Bao tirelessly cared for her day and night. After recovering, Shen Xiu seemed transformed. After her grief subsided, she began to re-examine the Hao Bao before her. As she came to understand him better, her admiration for Hao Bao slowly grew within her heart. By this time, the farm had developed well, and when Shen Xiu finally acknowledged her feelings for Hao Bao, his years of military service had taken a toll on his health, and he fell ill. Knowing his condition was severe, he didn’t want to burden Shen Xiu and gradually distanced himself from her. At this moment, Yuan Feng, wife of Commander Qiu Da Li, brought good news: General Wang Zhen had arranged for a hospital for him and planned to take him to Beijing for treatment. As the jeep carrying Hao Bao drove through the snowy landscape, Shen Xiu, dressed in her red wedding gown, stood in the middle of the road, and the car screeched to a halt...
