Among the movies/TV series I have watched, "Friends" is the one I've watched the most times. I've watched many episodes more than ten times. At first, I watched it to practice my English, but the more I watched, the better I thought it was. Every line of dialogue was humorous. A considerable part of my understanding of American culture and values also comes from "Friends".
In the later seasons of "Friends", more and more big-name stars made guest appearances, such as Julia Roberts, Brad Pitt, Bruce Willis, Winona Ryder, Susan Sarandon, Robin Williams, and Kristin Davis who played Charlotte in "Sex and the City". The screenwriters of "Friends" cleverly arranged the plots, which more or less involved aspects of the celebrities' lives or their most famous works. Some even made jokes about the celebrities' weaknesses.
One of the most classic episodes was when Winona Ryder played Rachel's college friend. As soon as she entered the Central Perk coffee shop, she asked Gunther (the manager of the coffee shop) for cigarettes, and he said they didn't have any. Winona didn't care whether the coffee shop provided the service or not; she just gave Gunther the money and told him to go buy them outside. People familiar with Winona's gossip should have a knowing smile here because in real life, Winona Ryder never personally "buys" things herself. She either asks others to buy them for her or steals them herself (she was caught once and it made the headlines). The scene where Winona makes Gunther buy cigarettes is undoubtedly something deliberately arranged by "Friends".
In real life, Jennifer Aniston's ex-boyfriend Brad Pitt plays Rachel's college classmate in one episode. Brad Pitt was teased mercilessly by Rachel for being overweight (in reality, Brad Pitt has an excellent physique), so much so that Pitt and Ross, who couldn't keep up with Rachel, formed an "I hate Rachel" club. I guess now Jennifer Aniston probably wants to form an "I hate Brad and Angelina" Club, haha.
Charlotte from "Sex and the City" had a very clear purpose in dating - to get married. When she met Joey, the ladies' man, in "Friends", sparks flew. Joey couldn't resist Rachel and Phoebe's good advice, changed his habit of "one-night stands", and wanted to develop a long-term relationship with Charlotte. However, Charlotte was only seeking excitement and wasn't looking for a serious relationship.
There must be other celebrity jokes in "Friends", but unfortunately, I don't know those gossips. Can you, dear readers, add some?
