Synopsis for Great Merchant of the Era - Meng Luochuan Episode 15:
The 2009 CCTV-8 historical drama series "Great Merchant of the Era - Meng Luochuan" tells the life story of Meng Luochuan, chronicling the legendary journey of this Confucian businessman who sought to benefit society and enrich the people...
Plot Summary:
Young Meng Luochuan inherits his family's silk and cloth business, "Yufu Xiang," and takes on the role of chief executive with a vision for reform. He introduces foreign yarns to produce a new type of fabric called "foreign warp, local weft," establishes a money shop, issues bonds, and implements a new business model of "loaning yarn for weaving." This leads to unprecedented growth for the business. However, Meng Luochuan unintentionally makes an enemy of Ai Longbiao, the son of the former shop manager, who uses the opening of the Suez Canal and domestic conflicts to deal a blow to Meng Luochuan's ventures.
After reflecting deeply on his failures and adhering to the teachings of the sages, Meng Luochuan recommits himself to honest business practices and successfully revives "Yufu Xiang." Throughout his career, Meng Luochuan upholds the principle of "a gentleman loves wealth but acquires it in a righteous way" and follows the creed of "considering righteousness when seeing profit and valuing benevolence when being wealthy." After achieving success, he builds roads, constructs bridges, establishes charitable schools, and provides disaster relief and aid to the poor. His philosophy of "focusing on self-improvement when in poverty and benefiting all under heaven when prosperous" reflects his Confucian merchant spirit of combining commerce with moral conduct and benefiting society, earning him widespread praise as a paragon of great merchants.
