Plot Summary of Great Merchant of the Era - Meng Luochuan Episode 10:
In 2009, CCTV-8 aired the historical drama series "Great Merchant of the Era - Meng Luochuan" in its entirety. The series narrates the life of Meng Luochuan, chronicling the legendary tale of a great Confucian merchant who adhered to the principles of "governing and benefiting the people."
Plot Introduction:
Young Meng Luochuan inherits his family's silk business, "Yufu Xiang," and takes on the role of chief administrator with ambitions for reform. He introduces foreign yarns to produce a new type of fabric known as "foreign warp and native weft." Additionally, he establishes a money shop, issues bonds, and implements a new operational model of "loaning yarn and promoting weaving," leading to unprecedented growth for the business. Meanwhile, Meng Luochuan unintentionally makes an enemy of Ai Longbiao, the son of the former shop manager. Ai Longbiao uses the opening of the Suez Canal and domestic conflicts to undermine Meng Luochuan's business.
After reflecting deeply on his failures and adhering to the teachings of the sages, Meng Luochuan recommits himself to honest commerce and manages to rebuild "Yufu Xiang." Throughout his career, Meng Luochuan upholds the principle of "a gentleman loves wealth but acquires it ethically," advocating the creed of "considering righteousness when encountering profit and valuing benevolence when becoming wealthy." After achieving success, he constructs roads, builds bridges, establishes charitable schools, and provides disaster relief and aid to the needy. His philosophy of "cultivating oneself when poor and helping the world when prosperous" is exemplified by his conduct as a merchant who embraces Confucian values and prioritizes governance for the benefit of the people. His reputation as a paragon of Confucian merchants has earned widespread praise from the public, making him a true exemplar of a great merchant of the era.
