"Rooms for Rent" began broadcasting on Jade at 7 PM every Sunday starting October 11, 2009.
The story revolves around an old apartment building in Sheung Wan's Gough Street named "Rooms for Rent," where a British returnee woman and a young, beautiful beer waitress move in, unveiling the identities of a group of tenants from all over: a fallen British gentleman, an elderly person without residency rights but with knowledge, a manager class returnee from mainland China, a mischievous "bankrupt" pop king, a young idealistic street fighter, and a South Asian construction worker raised in Hong Kong... Each has their own reasons for falling on hard times and their own hidden agendas for moving in here, all hoping for a chance to rise again. Amidst the conflicting interests between you and me, me and him, every day in this old tenement building plays out a series of dramatic life stories: family ties, friendship, love, brotherhood, patriotism, and more.
Each tenant has their own problems: urban redevelopment, youth losing jobs, education, and hope, racial discrimination, the plight of the younger generation, complaints about the city, new cross-border marriages, stress, debt, mainlandization, aging population, health, future prospects... The topical drama "Rooms for Rent" describes these people who live there seeking the false prestige of "living in Central" through light comedy, revealing various social issues and conflicts.
