The Chinese folk tale of Mulan disguising herself as a man to take her father's place in the army is deeply ingrained in people's hearts. Following Disney's successful animated version of "Mulan" in 1998, Hong Kong director Sammo Hung and actors Zhaowei and Chen Kun once again bring this story to the big screen.
As a female exemplar of filial piety in ancient China, Mulan has always been favored by creators of TV dramas and films. Director Sammo Hung also has a special affection for the movie "Mulan." He stated, "Directing a large-scale production with a good subject like 'Mulan' is the dream of every film director, and we will strive to present an audience with a vivid Mulan who embodies national integrity." Regarding the choice of Zhaowei to play the role of "Mulan," Director Hung expressed, "In the previous Disney version, Mulan had small eyes, thick lips, dark skin, and a shrugging manner of speaking, which does not align with our traditional image of Mulan from the Chinese nation. On the contrary, Zhaowei's bright-eyed and spirited image is closer to that of Mulan."
