The Chinese folk tale of Mulan disguising herself as a man to take her father's place in the army is well-known. Following Disney's successful 1998 animated version of "Mulan," Hong Kong director Sammo Hung and actors Zhao Wei and Chen Kun once again bring this story to the big screen.
As a female exemplar of filial piety in ancient China, Mulan has always been favored by filmmakers. Director Sammo Hung also has a special affection for the movie "Mulan." He stated, "Being able to direct such a grand production with a good theme like 'Mulan' is the dream of every film director. We will strive to present an audience with a vivid Mulan who embodies national integrity." Regarding the choice of Zhao Wei to play the role of "Mulan," Director Hung said, "In the previous Disney version, Mulan was depicted as having small eyes, thick lips, dark skin, and a shrugging manner of speaking, which does not align with our traditional image of Mulan from the Chinese nation. On the contrary, Zhao Wei's big-eyed, spirited image is closer to Mulan."
