Episode 1: Late autumn of 1938, in the heart of Yimeng, at Ma Mu Chi Village. The Li family was preparing for their son Li Jicheng's wedding. "His elder sister-in-law" looked at the newlyweds but felt a lump in her throat. It had been more than a year since she entered the house, and apart from the wedding night, she hadn't seen her husband Li Jichang again. Er Nao came running to say that a group of soldiers had arrived. Upon hearing that soldiers were coming, the guests drinking celebratory wine scattered in panic. Li Yushi took her whole family on the run, hiding in the mountains until the Japanese finished their sweep before daring to return home. When they entered the compound, they all froze in shock: the streets had been swept clean, everything was neat and orderly. At Li Yushi's house, the banquet and wedding gifts were still there untouched, with three silver dollars left behind, signed by the Eighth Route Army. Li Yushi's heart stirred; could it be that her eldest son Jichang, who said he was going to join the Eighth Route Army, had returned? In the evening, as Jicheng and his second sister-in-law lit their wedding candles, Jicheng made his bride laugh endlessly. His elder sister-in-law stood outside the bridal chamber, feeling particularly melancholy. The Japanese really did come, and everyone fled up the mountain to hide from them. By midday, San Ni had left her family, too tired from playing to keep going, and ended up returning home alone. A Japanese soldier spotted San Ni and grabbed her from behind.
