Plot Summary:
Patrick Jane (Golden Globe winner Simon Baker, "The Devil Wears Prada") used to write extensively in the media about various mental illnesses and supernatural senses, often appearing as a guest on TV talk shows, presenting himself as a psychological expert. However, this "semi-celebrity" admitted that his so-called "supernatural abilities" were nothing more than a scam to fool people—though his powers of observation and perception were far stronger than those of others.
Now, stepping away from the "celebrity circle," Jane has become an independent consultant for the California Bureau of Investigation's (CBI) special investigation unit. He uses his "mentalist" skills to solve multiple high-profile difficult cases, surprising many with his astonishing efficiency and success rate, earning him the title of a "superhuman." However, within the CBI, everyone knows Jane's true nature—he lacks discipline and refuses to follow rules.
Teresa Lisbon (Robin Tunney, "Prison Break"), who is stern and follows procedures strictly, finds Jane very challenging to manage—on one hand, she openly opposes Jane, thinking he is insincere, narcissistic, superficial, and enjoys showing off, not wanting him to stay in her team. She especially detests Jane’s inability to separate work from personal life, believing he will one day endanger everyone's safety. On the other hand, she can't deny that Jane's role is irreplaceable, and his judgment is valuable to her colleagues.
Lisbon's capable subordinates include the intelligent Kimball Cho (Tim Kang, "Rambo") and the less astute Wayne Rigsby (Owain Yeoman, "The Nine"), as well as a completely inexperienced rookie, Grace Van Pelt (Amanda Righetti, "The O.C."). Although Grace also feels that Jane's free-spirited behavior poses a threat to the team, she deeply admires Jane's investigative techniques and his irresistible charm.
In the first episode, a couple’s (Steven Culp, Gail O'Grady) daughter mysteriously disappears, and all the evidence points to the troublemaking boy next door. After merely "strolling" around the victim's home, Jane points out that the girl's father is the real culprit. This isn’t the first time Jane has bypassed standard procedures, and the result is shocking. An enraged Lisbon suspends Jane from duty.
Two weeks later, Lisbon takes on a new case—a golfer’s wife and her doctor are murdered in Palm Springs. Once again, Jane shows up uninvited, volunteering to "help" his beautiful boss solve the case. What truly interests Jane are the traces left by the serial killer "Red John"—a smiley face drawn on the victim's palm. Jane seems to have some connection with "Red John"—it was because of "Red John" that Jane completely left behind his former frivolous life and exited the famous talk show that made him a household name.
Suspects emerge one after another... Who is the murderer? Is it the golfer himself, who had an affair? Is it the brother who had an affair with his wife? Or is it the doctor's colleague who embezzled funds? Has "Red John" really returned? These questions will gradually uncover Patrick Jane’s true self, revealing to the audience a real person: someone who is driven but exhausted; hopeful yet heartbroken; incredibly intelligent but filled with fear.
