Plot Summary:
During the Tianbao period of the Tang Dynasty, it rained continuously for two years in the Bamboo Forest Village, causing great suffering to the villagers. At this time, three strangers arrived in the village—an old man, an old woman, and their foolish son. The old man recalled a past event.
Forty years ago, two bandits, Xue Shisan and Chen Liu, amassed a large amount of treasure during a robbery. They buried the treasure and passed through the Bamboo Forest Village, where they saved a young girl named Luo Niang by killing several soldiers. Afraid of trouble, the villagers captured the two bandits, but they escaped during the night. The villagers used traps to recapture them and handed them over to the official army. Unexpectedly, a female butcher named Ying Ge helped them escape again, and they went on a killing spree. They stayed in the village, and Chen Liu raped Luo Niang but fell in love with her, determined to stay and become her husband. This challenged the friendship between him and Xue Shisan.
The village chief led the soldiers to the village, but instead of capturing the bandits, the soldiers planned to massacre the entire village.
