Plot Summary:
Years ago, the Japanese army trampled on the ancient city of Handan. On the Cong Terrace of King Wuling of Zhao, Japanese Major Asada Yoshio bragged to reporters: to achieve military strikes and economic control in the occupied areas, and to comprehensively promote the cultural infiltration that enslaves China.
The famous Handan Temple Fair, which had been suspended for three years due to war and fire, was restored under the sinister planning of the invaders and traitors. The renowned Pingdiao and Luozi opera celebrities "Gai Jiuzhou", "Qi Suihong", "Shuixianhua", etc., performed on stage to embellish the false peace, but were disrupted by the attack of the Qingyunzhai anti-Japanese armed force "Black God". Liu Junsheng, the captain of the Cultural Work Team of the 129th Division responsible for forming an anti-Japanese theater troupe, infiltrated the temple fair and witnessed the open conflicts between various factions at the scene.
Chen Wen yuan, a wealthy man, was the head of the Pingdiao and Luozi opera troupe. His "Chen Family Troupe" became a disseminator of Japanese puppet culture. "Gai Jiuzhou" Li Tianbei and "Qi Suihong" Hao Dandan were both famous actors in his troupe. Asada and Chen Wen yuan's son, Chen Nanxiang, formed a troupe loyal to Japan called the "Huangtian Theater Troupe".
On the other hand, the Eighth Route Army countered by forming the "Eighth Route Army Anti-Japanese Performance Troupe", attracting many folk artists to join. Liu Junsheng repeatedly invited Li Tianbei to join but was refused each time. Many artists of the Huangtian Theater Troupe were trapped. Chen Nanxiang tricked Li Tianbei into going to the Handan Grand Theater, intending to recruit him into the "Huangtian Theater Troupe". Li Tianbei teased the wolf dog raised by Japanese officer Asada and the hyena dog of the famous actor Qin Peiliang, causing them to tear each other apart, angering others. To please Asada, Chen Nanxiang ordered Hao Dandan to sing for the dogs, and she endured the humiliation and obeyed. From then on, to compete for famous actors and win the hearts of the people, the Eighth Route Army and the Huangtian Theater Troupe engaged in a fierce struggle, using intelligence and courage in the cultural battlefield.
Hao Dandan escaped from the jaws of the Japanese army and was rescued by Liu Junsheng, joining the anti-Japanese theater troupe. Initially, due to the hardships of life, she was not accustomed to it, but later, seeing the political commissar sharing the same hardships as the soldiers, she was deeply moved. Li Tianbei narrowly missed the opportunity to join the Eighth Route Army once. Asada then instructed Chen Nanxiang to capture Li Tianbei again, forcing him to serve the Japanese. With the help of his master and Zhang Tingzhu of the puppet army security team, he managed to escape, only to be lured out again by the cunning Chen Nanxiang using his junior apprentice Zheng Lingguang as bait. Li Tianbei agreed to perform a play on the platform at Qili Store before submitting. After the performance, he was captured by the Qingyunzhai resistance force, where he discovered that "Black God" was actually a beautiful female knight. That night, Li Tianbei got the female bandit chief drunk, stole a horse and fled, eventually joining the Eighth Route Army.
Under the command of Asada, the Huangtian Theater Troupe vigorously promoted cultural infiltration, advocating the "Great East Asia" culture, but was resisted by the people.
During the arduous anti-Japanese war period, this theater troupe staged many new "Pingdiao, Luozi" plays compiled according to the party's central tasks, specifically implementing the spirit of Chairman Mao's speech at the Yan'an Forum on Literature and Art, using literary and artistic weapons to serve the anti-Japanese war.
The anti-Japanese theater troupe conducted propaganda in various villages of the liberated areas and in the "blind zones" bordering enemy-occupied areas. In addition to performing excellent traditional plays, they also adapted and performed many small plays according to the situation. A play titled "Sending My Husband to Join the Army" sparked a wave of enthusiastic sign-ups for the army at the performance site.
Zheng Lingguang, a fellow apprentice of Li Tianbei, fell into the habit of smoking opium and was bought off by Chen Nanxiang, who sent him to infiltrate the Eighth Route Army Anti-Japanese Theater Troupe, becoming a spy and leaking the whereabouts of our troupe several times.
Du Chunhong, the female bandit chief of Qingyunzhai, was obsessed with "Pingdiao, Luozi" and harbored a one-sided affection for Li Tianbei, inviting him up the mountain to perform for her multiple times. Upon hearing that Li Tianbei joined the Eighth Route Army, she did not give up. Once, while sneaking into Nancun Village where Li Tianbei was performing, she was attacked by Chen Nanxiang, sustaining a gunshot wound. The Eighth Route Army theater troupe helped her return to the mountain stronghold, where actress Yu Wenjia extracted the bullet, and she began considering herself a friend of the Eighth Route Army. Asada invited a Japanese Kabuki performer named Mieji, responsible for teaching Japanese songs and dances to the Huangtian Theater Troupe. On the night of Asada's birthday, his sadistic tendencies escalated, ordering Mieji to whip him. When she refused, he threatened her with a gun. Filled with anger after enduring much humiliation, Mieji knocked Asada unconscious, mistakenly believing she had killed him, and fled in panic to the neighboring troupe, where she was taken back to the Eighth Route Army base by Li Tianbei, who was searching for Hao Dandan. She first joined the Anti-War Alliance and later became part of the anti-Japanese theater troupe.
Li Tianbei was forced into marriage by Du Chunhong on Qingyunzhai Mountain but firmly refused. On the night of Du Chunhong's one-sided wedding, Japanese puppet troops launched a surprise attack. Du Chunhong burned down the stronghold, sent away Li Tianbei, retreated to Ziyundong, and after being rescued by the Eighth Route Army, led her troops to join the Eighth Route Army, forming an independent battalion with her as the battalion commander.
The anti-Japanese theater troupe impersonated the Huangtian Theater Troupe and bloodlessly captured the Qingyao watchtower, infuriating Asada, who retaliated fiercely against the base area. The Huangtian Theater Troupe sent by him was captured by the Eighth Route Army. Their actors were controlled by the Japanese puppet forces through collective responsibility, so a few stayed behind, while the rest were educated and released. The famous actor "Shuixianhua" Yang Xiaoqin, who intended to join the Eighth Route Army, returned and, while singing at a banquet for Japanese generals, was molested by a drunken Japanese officer. With a bit of skill, Yang Xiaoqin knocked him down, took his briefcase, and thus obtained important intelligence. Based on this, the Eighth Route Army won a brilliant battle, staging a "Empty City Stratagem," deceiving the enemy and inflicting heavy losses.
In the cruel struggle, the director of the anti-Japanese theater troupe, Liu Junsheng, and member Jin Shunji successively sacrificed their lives. Li Tianbei became the director. The war-time stage career honed this "Pingdiao, Luozi" celebrity into an outstanding cadre, but he was constantly retreating from Du Chunhong's wild romantic pursuit, greatly hurting her feelings.
The arrival of young Washington Post reporter David added a touch of Western fun to this troupe. He decided to live a hard life just like everyone else.
The dying Japanese army decided to drop biological weapons on the base area, secretly transporting them from Northeast China's Unit 731 to Handan. Intelligence leaked from various channels within the enemy, drawing high attention from the Eighth Route Army. Through Li Tianbei, Hao Dandan, Du Chunhong, and Yang Xiaoqin's deep infiltration into the tiger's den, Li Tianbei thrice went to the puppet army's position to persuade Zhang Tingzhu to defect, finally devising a plan to achieve three goals. First, Zhang Tingzhu would invite the Huangtian Theater Troupe to entertain the troops at the mine area, intercepting them along the way. The anti-Japanese theater troupe impersonated the Huangtian Theater Troupe and went to Zhang Tingzhu's unit, luring the Japanese garrison at the mine area, led by Lieutenant Xiao Ye, to the theater for dinner and watching the play. During the performance of "Four Sides of Chu Song," they disarmed the Xiao Ye unit. Du Chunhong led her troops to capture the special action group guarding the biological weapons for the Japanese army, ultimately seizing the biological weapons hidden in the Huangtian Theater Troupe's prop boxes and destroying them on the spot.
The old landlord Chen Wen yuan, filled with resentment towards his traitorous son and regret over becoming a Japanese puppet, died spitting blood.
When the news of the Japanese emperor's surrender came, Asada committed suicide by shooting himself.
At the end of 1945, the ancient city of Handan was liberated, and our Eighth Route Army wiped out the remaining bandits and spies. At the meeting, "Gai Jiuzhou" and "Black God" finally married happily, becoming a widely spread legendary love story locally.
The next day, the Eighth Route Army political commissar led all the actors to sprinkle wine as a sacrifice at Liu Junsheng's grave, mourning the fallen comrades.
