In the late Yuan Dynasty, Wudang disciple Zhang Cuishan and the daughter of the Eagle Claw Sect leader Yin Sosu became involved in the competition for the Dragon Saber, drifting with the Golden Lion King Xie Xun to a deserted island at sea. Zhang Cuishan and Yin Su married and had a son named Wuji. Ten years later, Zhang Cuishan returned to China with his wife but due to their connection with the Dragon Saber, both were forced to commit suicide, leaving behind their orphaned son, Zhang Wuji.

By chance, Zhang Wuji mastered unparalleled martial arts skills and saved the Ming Cult from peril, being elected as its leader. Princess Zhao Min of the Yuan Dynasty fell in love with Zhang Wuji after several encounters with the Ming Cult.
