In the late Yuan Dynasty, Zhang Cuishan, a disciple of Wudang, and Yin Susu, the daughter of the leader of the Tian Ying Sect, were caught up in the struggle for the Dragon Slaying Saber and drifted to an uninhabited island at sea with Xie Xun, the Lion King. Zhang and Yin got married and had a son named Wuji. Ten years later, Zhang Cuishan and his wife returned to the mainland but were forced to commit suicide due to their involvement with the Dragon Slaying Saber, leaving behind their orphaned son, Zhang Wuji.
By chance, Zhang Wuji mastered unparalleled martial arts skills and saved the Ming Cult from peril, being elected as its leader. Princess Zhao Min of the Yuan Dynasty fell in love with Zhang Wuji after several encounters with the Ming Cult. For him, she gave up her title as princess and broke ties with her father and brother.
