In the late Yuan Dynasty, Zhang Cuishan, a disciple of Wudang, becomes entangled in the struggle for the Dragon Saber with Yin Susu, the daughter of the leader of the Tianying Sect. Together with Xie Xun, the Golden Lion King, they drift to an uninhabited island at sea. Zhang and Yin fall in love and have a son, naming him Zhang Wujie. Ten years later, Zhang Cuishan and his wife return to the mainland but are forced to commit suicide due to their involvement with the Dragon Saber, leaving behind their orphaned son, Zhang Wujie.
By chance, Zhang Wujie masters extraordinary martial arts skills and rescues the Ming Sect from peril, being elected as its leader. Princess Zhao Min of the Yuan Dynasty falls in love with Zhang Wujie after several encounters with the Ming Sect and ultimately renounces her title as princess, breaking ties with her father and brother. Besides Zhao Min, Zhang Wujie also develops romantic feelings for Zhou Zhiruo of the Emei Sect, his cousin Yin Li, and Xiaozhao, the Persian Saintess.
Zhou Zhiruo is the first to discover the secret of the Heaven Sword and Dragon Saber: the maps hidden within them lead to the secrets of martial arts manuals. She steals the sword and saber, kills Yin Li, and frames Zhao Min. Unaware of the truth, Zhang Wujie harbors resentment. Zhao Min, unable to defend herself, can only helplessly watch as Zhang Wujie marries Zhou Zhiruo.
However, news about Xie Xun interrupts Zhang Wujie's wedding with Zhou Zhiruo. Zhang Wujie finally realizes that Zhao Min is his true love. After deeply understanding the essence of martial arts and lifting the siege on Shaolin Temple by the Yuan army, Zhang Wujie resigns as the leader of the sect and retreats with Zhao Min to live a secluded life in the mountains.
