In the late Yuan Dynasty, Wudang disciple Zhang Cuishan became involved in the struggle for the Dragon Saber with the daughter of the Tianying Sect leader, Yin Sosu. Together with the Golden Lion King Xie Xun, they drifted to a deserted island at sea. Zhang and Yin got married and had a son named Wuji. Ten years later, Zhang Cuishan and his wife returned to the mainland but were forced to commit suicide due to their involvement with the Dragon Saber, leaving behind their orphaned son, Zhang Wuji.

By chance, Zhang Wuji mastered unparalleled martial arts skills and saved the Ming Sect from peril, being elected as its leader. Princess Zhao Min of the Yuan Dynasty fell in love with Zhang Wuji after several encounters with the Ming Sect and ultimately abandoned her title as princess, breaking ties with her father and brother.
