In the late Yuan Dynasty, Wudang disciple Zhang Cuishan becomes involved in a dispute over the Dragon Saber with the daughter of the head of the Tian Ying Sect, Yin Susu. Together with Xie Xun, the Golden-Haired Lion King, they drift to a deserted island at sea. Zhang Cuishan and Yin Susu unite and have a son named Wuji. Ten years later, Zhang Cuishan returns to China with his wife but due to their connection with the Dragon Saber, both are forced to commit suicide, leaving behind their orphaned son, Zhang Wuji.
By chance, Zhang Wuji masters unparalleled martial arts skills and saves the Ming Cult from peril, leading to his election as its leader. Princess Zhao Min of the Yuan Dynasty falls in love with Zhang Wuji after several encounters with the Ming Cult.
