The heiress of the Lín family tofu shop in the southern part of the city is named Lín Wànrú. Her neighbor Zhōu Yǒngxiáng, who earns his living as a cart-puller, is her childhood friend and comes to the tofu shop to help every day. One day, Lín’s father, having co-signed a loan with exorbitant interest for his cousin, ends up losing their house and shop, leading to a conflict. Gāo Mínghuī, the young master of the largest timber business in the city, happens to pass by and, together with Yǒngxiáng, saves Wànrú. Lín’s mother subsequently falls ill and passes away. To pay off the debts, Wànrú goes to work as a servant at Hánxiāng Building. Out of sympathy, Mínghuī offers Lín’s father a job at the timber company, but on his way there, Lín’s father is involved in a car accident. To raise money for her father's medical treatment, Wànrú reluctantly agrees to entertain guests and drink with them at Hánxiāng Building...
