In September 1949, after the People's Liberation Army achieved victory in the three major battles of Liaoshen, Huaihai, and Pingjin, they accelerated their steps to carry the revolution through to the end. A part of the Third Field Army marched south of the Yangtze River, reaching Zhejiang and Jiangxi provinces, sweeping through Fujian, and advancing towards the sea. The remnants of the Nationalist forces retreated to the Jinma Islands. Battalion Commander Wang Benli and Political Commissar Li Shanui of the Red Sixth Regiment under the Independent Division received orders to prepare for a cross-sea landing operation but ended up suffering a defeat instead.
The failure of the "Kinmen Sea Battle" prompted the high-ranking officials of the new China to strengthen naval construction. Wang Benli, who was unable to participate in the battle due to illness, changed his name to "Wang Shanui" in memory of his fallen comrade Li Shanui. Afterwards, he was ordered to participate in the Korean War. After his victory, driven by his "navy" sentiment, he returned to build the navy in the Red Sea area, and dramatically married Dr. Xu Jinyun, who had once saved him.
