Plot Summary:
28 years ago, the most epoch-making moment in human history arrived! For the first time ever, a group of extraterrestrial visitors broke through the Earth's atmosphere and made contact with humans. In the face of an unknown extraterrestrial species with space travel capabilities, every Earthling was filled with apprehension - are we about to face overwhelming military attacks? Or will we be swept away by advanced civilizations? Strangely enough, it seems that human fears may be exaggerated, as these mysterious aliens actually agreed to the proposal of governments around the world, temporarily staying in South Africa and residing in a specially established quarantine area, reaching a non-aggression agreement with Earthlings. The mysterious "District 9" was thus born.
Amicable relations are bound to be only surface-level illusions. For the majority of the public, whether it is the huge cost of the "District 9" project or the ticking time bomb of having aliens nearby, their resistance grows stronger day by day; and for the alien life forms under quarantine, discrimination, and even confinement, isn't Earth just like a maximum-security prison? But for the profit-driven MNU multinational corporation, treating alien life forms kindly is all just an excuse. Their real purpose in gaining control over "District 9" is to be the first to crack the code of the incredibly powerful alien advanced weapons. However, progress on this potentially highly profitable project has been slow so far, and the reason is simple: to activate the alien weaponry, one must first have alien genetic material as a trigger.
The multinational corporation, facing a bottleneck, decided to involve special agents in the development process, one of whom is Wikus van der Merwe (Sharlto Copley). Unexpectedly, during an accident, Wikus was injured by an alien bio-weapon, infecting him with a mysterious virus, causing his genes to mutate, and his appearance gradually transforming into that of an alien! Overnight, this somewhat clumsy man became the most important test subject in the development of alien weapons, pursued by various forces. With nowhere to turn, perhaps the only place that can now shelter him is the mysterious District 9...
