The story unfolds from the 1930s, spanning 70 years until the present day.
Kuxiang was born into a large Peranakan family as the daughter of a lowly concubine. She is gentle and beautiful, having learned excellent culinary skills and needlework from her mother since childhood. Being naturally deaf and mute, she faced much discrimination and was arranged to marry a wealthy Baba as a concubine just before the Japanese forces moved southward. Kuxiang resisted and fled the marriage, encountering a young Japanese photographer. After several twists and turns, they got married and had a daughter named Yuenniang. Amidst the tumultuous times, she endured great suffering. Her husband died, and so did she, leaving behind their only 8-year-old daughter, Yuenniang.
Yuenniang eventually returned to her declining maternal grandfather's home. After the war, her grandfather's family who had fled to Britain came back. Like her mother once was, Yuenniang faced discrimination, beatings, and torment but endured it all to protect her grandmother.

Chen Xi was actually from a prestigious family but concealed his identity while associating with Yuenniang. He was deeply moved by her innocence, kindness, and resilience, falling in love with her. Yet, their romance faced numerous obstacles. Under pressure from all sides, Chen Xi was forced to marry Yuenniang's cousin, while Yuenniang was sold to a pig butcher named Liu Yidao.
Unwilling to let her life be controlled by others, Yuenniang decided to end her own life. Her fierce spirit instead earned Liu Yidao's respect, leading them to become sworn siblings. Yuenniang resolved to forge her own path. She began learning how to do business, facing betrayals, expulsions, and setbacks along the way, yet she overcame them all and eventually revived her family's declining business. However, her romantic life remained unresolved. The man she deeply loved still remained out of reach...
