Plot Summary:

Patrick Jane (Golden Globe winner Simon Baker, "The Devil Wears Prada") used to write extensively in the media about various mental illnesses and supernatural senses, and regularly appeared as a guest on television talk shows, presenting himself as a psychological expert. However, this "semi-celebrity" openly admitted that his so-called "supernatural abilities" were nothing more than a scam to fool people—albeit one bolstered by observation and perception skills far stronger than those of others.

Now, after stepping away from the "celebrity circuit," Jane has become an independent consultant for the California Bureau of Investigation's (CBI) special case investigation unit. He uses his "psychic" specialties to solve multiple high-profile difficult and pending cases, with his astonishing efficiency and success record earning him the nickname "divine being." However, within the bureau, everyone knows Jane's background—he lacks discipline and is unwilling to follow rules.

Teresa Lisbon (Robin Tunney, "Prison Break"), who is stern and rigid, adhering strictly to the book, finds Jane very frustrating—on one hand, she openly rejects Jane, thinking he is insincere, narcissistic, all style but no substance, and doesn't want him in her team. She particularly detests Jane's lack of distinction between public and private matters, fearing that one day he will threaten everyone's safety. On the other hand, she can't help but admit that Jane's role is irreplaceable, and his judgment is valuable to his colleagues.

Lisbon's capable subordinates include the intelligent Kimball Cho (Tim Kang, "Rambo") and the clumsy Wayne Rigsby (Owain Yeoman, "The Nine"), as well as a completely inexperienced newcomer, Grace Van Pelt (Amanda Righetti, "The O.C."). Although Grace also believes that Jane's free-spirited behavior is a threat to everyone, she deeply admires Jane's investigative techniques and his irresistible male charm.

In the first episode, a couple's (Steven Culp, Gail O'Grady) daughter mysteriously disappears, and all the incriminating evidence points to a troublesome boy from the neighboring house. After merely strolling through the victim's home, Jane points out that the girl's father is the real culprit. This isn't the first time Jane hasn't followed standard procedures, and the result is surprising. An enraged Lisbon suspends Jane from duty.

Two weeks later, Lisbon takes on a new case—a golfer's wife and her doctor are murdered in Palm Springs. Once again, Jane volunteers uninvited to "help" his beautiful boss solve the case. What truly interests Jane are the traces left behind by the serial killer "Red John"—a smiley face drawn on the victim's palm. There seems to be some connection between Jane and "Red John"—it was because of "Red John" that Jane completely bid farewell to his past frivolous life, withdrawing from the famous talk show that made him a household name.

Suspects emerge one after another... Who is the murderer? Is it the golfer himself who had an affair? Is it the brother who had an affair with his wife? Or is it the doctor's embezzling colleague? Has "Red John" really returned? These questions will gradually uncover Patrick Jane's true self, revealing to the audience a real him: someone with a sense of urgency but exhausted; full of hope but with a broken heart; extraordinarily smart but filled with fear.
